Why is my thermostat rusty? Well for starters, what is rust? Rust is a result of a reaction called oxidation, in which iron and oxygen reacts with moisture, forming iron oxide or what we commonly know as rust. The reddish- and yellowish-brown on the right is an example of this process - rust. We often see this in a vehicle’s cooling system, after a coolant leak has been left open and not repaired for an extended period of time. The leak in the cooling system allows oxyg...en to enter what is supposed to be a closed system and starts to creates rust. This is not a good thing. The rust particles will flake off, which can plug and obstruct the operation of the cooling system. If you suspect or you have a coolant leak, get it fixed as soon as possible. If left unrepaired, the leak will most definitely cost you more the longer you wait.
