Although we feel that this lockdown is unfair for small businesses, Kreative Dance Co will switch to virtual classes for the remainder of April. We urge our families to reach out and call your MPP, councilor, and Mayor. Let’s use our voices as we are stronger together

Our fearless leader, Ms. Mariah is the driving force behind KDC! The studio wouldn't be what it is today without her ambition, drive, passion and love for her students - thank you for all that you do to make KDC an incredible space Mariah Awaiye began her dance career at the age of four. From there she joined her first competitive team at the age of eight and have been competing and dancing throughout Canada and the United States ever since. Mariah loves movement, music an...d acting. Over the past 5 years Mariah as appeared in commercials for Cineplex, Swiss Chalet, Rogers and more! Mariah has had the opportunity to dance for the Toronto Marlies Dance Crew as well as two seasons with Toronto Raptors Dance Pak. Mariah is a certified yoga instructor, canfitpro certified fitness instructor and certified acrobatics instructor through Acrobatic Arts. Mariah is currently working towards her jazz and tap exams to become an associate member of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association (CDTA). Mariah is a recent graduate of York University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program specializing in Dance and cannot wait to share all her knowledge with the students at Kreative Dance Company. See more

Welcome back Ms. Emily as a guest choreographer! Emily Battalia is an instructor, choreographer and adjudicator from Orillia, Ontario with over a decade of dedicated teaching and choreography experience. As a student, Emily trained extensively in various styles including jazz, ballet, acrobatics, tap, and contemporary, and her dancing has taken her all over the world. Emily has performed on many stages including shows at Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida an...d most memorably, she travelled to Riesa, Germany with the Canadian National Showdance Team where she represented Canadian on a worldwide stage. While she always loved performing, dance education and choreography are her true passions. Emily began training students and choreographing routines at a young age and after high school she was an integral part of developing the award winning Wilfrid Laurier Competitive Dance Team and worked as their head choreographer while she completed her Honours BBA degree. Most recently one of her choreographic pieces has been nominated for Choreography of the Year by View Dance Challenge and IDA’s People’s Choice Award by StarQuest Dance. Beyond choreography, Emily is a dynamic and nurturing dance educator who believes that consistent training is the key to any young dancer’s success. Emily has graduated with a gold seal from the ADAPT syllabus teachers training program, where she completed an extensive 3 years of training, under the direction of Brian and Faye Foley in the styles of Tap and Jazz. She is also a member of the Professional Adjudicators Alliance and has completed her Alixa Flexibility Module 1 Certification Course. Additionally, under her guidance, many of Emily’s students have moved on to study dance in post-secondary environments in some of Canada’s most prestigious programs including York University Dance, Ryerson Dance, and Intrepid Dance Company. Emily is always looking to grow herself as an artist while simultaneously inspiring those around her to experiment with creating their own individual voice and passion.

Welcome back Ms. Shannon as a guest choreographer! Shannon has always loved to be in the studio. She started her dance career at the age of 4 and has loved every minute of it! Initially training in Toronto she would eventually move to London where she would complete many R.A.D. and B.A.T.D. examinations culminating in her B.A.T.D. Associate Membership, as well as being 1 of 28 senior candidates selected from across Canada and the US. to compete for an inte...rnational Stage/Tap scholarship. She began dancing competitively at the age of 8, starting with tap, ballet, jazz and acro. Eventually she expanded her dance repertoire to also include lyrical, modern, pointe, hip-hop, character, musical theatre and song & dance. As a competitive dancer she has been awarded many adjudicator’s choice and overall awards. As well as attending international and finals in Orlando, Florida and being part of one of two dance troupes selected to represent Canada at a ‘Dance Excellence’ international convention in California. Shannon has 10 years of teaching experience and loves to encourage and inspire her students both young and old. Her main focus and passion is tap but she also loves to teach lyrical/contemporary, jazz, and acro. She understands the importance of staying current in the dance world. As such, she has attended The Pulse’s Teacher workshop in NYC (Shane Sparks, Michelle Dorrance, Wade Robson), The Pulse in Chicago (Tyce Diorio, Mia Michaels), taken class at Broadway Centre (Barbara Duffy-tap legend, Anthony LoCascio-Tap Dogs). And most recently attended Shawn Byfield’s summer tap intensive in Toronto, where she was lucky enough to take class with Shawn himself, as well as David Cox and S.Y.T.Y.C.D.’s Everett Smith. Shannon thoroughly enjoys teaching and it shows on her students, many of them winning adjudicator’s choice awards, overall high point awards, and cash scholarships both nationally and internationally. She is very excited to be joining the team at KDC again and can’t wait to start working with their wonderful students and staff. See more

Welcome back to Kylee as a guest choreographer! Kylee Surtel is a versatile dancer, choreographer, educator, and certified personal trainer based out of the GTA. Born and raised in Niagara, Ontario, she has acquired over 20+ years of training in various dance styles such as jazz, tap, ballet, modern, contemporary, lyrical and hip hop. She has completed all levels in the Jazz and Tap PAEC syllabus and was technically trained and examined in Cecchetti ballet.... Kylee graduated from York University with an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and a disciplinary certificate in Dance Science. During her University studies she was heavily involved as a dancer, choreographer and captain for the competitive team York Lions Dance Energy and choreographed for several York University events. Kylee’s professional credits include OMI, Karl Wolf, One Republic, Dean Brody, Tim Hicks, and Mickey Singh to name a few. Her credits in film and television include MMVA’s, TSN, Coors Light and Breakfast Television. She has also been seen performing live across Canada as a CFL Toronto Argonauts Dancer, NLL Toronto Rock Lacrosse Dancer as well as in several Toronto shows such as Fever After Dark and Toronto’s Choreographers Ball. Currently, Kylee works as the Director of Operations for one of the leading drop-in dance studios in Canada, The Underground Dance Centre. She is currently a faculty member at JCB Danceworks can occasionally be seen teaching adult drop-in classes at The Underground Dance Centre (current) and O.I.P (past). She is now a proud member of the Professional Adjudicators Alliance and cannot wait to further her career while inspiring dancers through her teaching and adjudicating. Kylee is thrilled to be back working with the Kreative Dance family and cannot wait to see what this season has to offer!

New Faculty Member Alert Welcome Kareen to the KDC family! Kareen Kotwa-Senechal is the past Owner and Director of Dance Vision Performing Arts Studio in Barrie, ON. She is an award winning dancer, teacher and choreographer with over 30 years of training in Pointe, Ballet, Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Lyrical, Jazz and Tap. Over the course of her 20+ year teaching career, she has been recognized for the excellent technical training of her students an...d her notable choreography. Her students have been the recipients of many honourable awards in Canada, winning numerous overall top scores in all categories and divisions. In addition, they have received spirit, sportsmanship and commitment awards. Many of her students have gone on to careers in all areas of the dance industry including The National Ballet of Canada, Randolph Academy of the Performing Arts, OIP, as well as the teaching profession. Having been a successful dance studio owner for 13 years, her passion, talent and drive earned her studio to be recognized as the Best Studio in Barrie by local publications, as well as she received a Governer’s Award for business. Kareen values and continues her involvement with teacher educational programs and national level workshops to ensure that she and her students are updated with the latest styles and techniques. Kareen is a graduate of the Dance Arts Program at Cambrian College, as well as, a graduate of the Dance Masters of America Teacher Training School, University at Buffalo. She is an active member of the Canadian Dance Masters of America, Dance Masters of America and Dance Educators of America for 20+ years. Kareen served as Director of Examinations for CDMA Chapter #38 for 10 years, as she is a certified examiner regionally and nationally administering annual teacher’s Examinations. She is also a proud member of the Professional Adjudicator’s Alliance. Kareen is now a freelance teacher that is committed to creating a strong dance education for the students she teaches. Welcoming back Ms. Isabella! Isabella began dancing at the age of 2 and has truly loved every minute of it! At the age of 7 she really wanted to try gymnastics and trained at Northern Stars for two seasons. Isabella quickly realized it was the style of Acro that captured her heart. She began dancing again at the age of 9 and started competing in styles such as Jazz, Tap, Ballet and Acro. Eventually she added Lyrical, Contemporary and Musical Theatre. Isabel...la has won many overalls and numerous scholarships, her most recent being a scholarship to Dancer Palooza held in California. She has also attended many dance conventions like Canadian Dance Expo, Dance Attack and a summer intensive program at Dark Dance in Toronto. Isabella has been so lucky to have worked with incredible choreographers including Mariah Awaiye, Gerard McIsaac, Shawn Byfield, Gregory Hines, Mike Song, Jesse Mateau, Lineen Doung, Hollywood Jade, Shannon Murray, Allison Bradley and many more. In 2017, Isabella took the grade one examination for tap dancing and successfully completed it. Isabella is always striving to provide the best possible dance experience to all her dance students. Welcome back Mackenzie! Mackenzie began dancing at the age of two and instantly fell in love with the art. At the age of six, Mackenzie began competing in jazz, ballet and hip hop. She has since continued to compete and loves various styles of dance. Throughout her competitive career Mackenzie has won numerous awards and overalls. She travelled to New York City where she danced in the Disney production of Dance the Magic on Broadway and worked with industry l...eaders. She has performed in a music video with Steve Major and worked with fantastic choreographers including Mariah Awaiye, Greggory Heinz, Lineen Deung, Shannon Murray, Derick Robinson, Irvin Washington, Jordan Clark, Jade Hollywood Anderson, Allison Bradley, Lamar Johnson, Paige Sealey, Nico De Jesus, Judine Somerville, Olivia Hutcherson and many more. Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in San Pedro, California, Misty Copeland began her ballet studies at the late age of thirteen. She studied at the San Francisco Ballet School and American Ballet Theatre’s Summer Intensive on full scholarship and was declared ABT’s National Coca-Cola Scholar in 2000. Misty joined ABT’s Studio Company in September 2000, joined Am...erican Ballet Theatre as a member of the corps de ballet in April 2001, and in August 2007 became the company’s second African American female Soloist and the first in two decades. Misty’s passion is giving back. She has worked with many charitable organizations and is dedicated to giving of her time to work with and mentor young girls and boys. In 2014, President Obama appointed Misty to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition. Welcome back Ms. Laura! Laura began dancing at the age of seven at Dance Vision Performing Arts Studio in Barrie and joined their competitive team at age eleven. During her seven years as a competitive team member, Laura competed at various competitions throughout Ontario in jazz, tap, ballet, musical theatre, lyrical, and hip hop and won numerous awards for her groups, trios, duets, and solos. Laura also volunteered as a dance teaching assistant in her yout...h and taught younger students jazz and tap in her final three years of high school. Laura was also very active in the dance program at Bear Creek Secondary School, acting as a peer assistant for a younger dance class, helping with choreography for the musicals, and dancing on the dance team. Laura was accepted to the BFA Dance program at York University, but chose to major in anthropology with dance as a minor. In addition to minoring in dance, Laura also danced on the York Lions Performance Dance Team and the York Lions Competitive Dance Team. Most recently, Laura completed her Master of Arts in Social Anthropology, but dance continues to be a huge part of her life and she is super excited to be back at Kreative Dance Company to share her passion with others! New Faculty Member Alert Welcome Regan to the KDC Family Regan McQuoid began dancing at the age of 3 and has trained and competed in many styles including ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, hip hop and modern dance. Growing up, she always enjoyed participating in as many opportunities as she could, including two summers at the prestigious Rockettes Summer Intensive at Radio City Music Hall in New York City in 2011 and 2012. She also began an apprenticeship wi...th Simcoe Contemporary Dancers while still in high school and continued to dance with them through her University experience as a guest artist. Regan attended York University and graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts Honours in Dance, specialising in Choreography and Performance. She also spent the final year of her degree on exchange in England at The University of Chichester in their dance department, having one of her choreographic works performed by their undergraduate touring company 3Fall Dance Company. Since graduating Regan has become a certified instructor in tap and jazz through ADAPT as well as completing her Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies through the Royal Academy of Dance. She is currently working towards her acrobatic dance certification through the Acro Dance Teachers Association. Regan is also a certified Pilates, Barre and Yoga instructor and brings her knowledge of healthy and safe movement to all of her classes. She always stays up to date with current dance science and loves to share her passion for the art form with her students! See more

Welcome back Ms. Effie! Effie began her dance training at the age of 4 in Toronto and began competing at the age of 5 in the styles of Jazz, Tap, Acrobatics, Musical Theatre, Ballet (R.A.D. completing ballet exams) and eventually Lyrical and Hip Hop. She has attended conventions in Canada and the United States as well as performed abroad as a professional dancer. Effie began her teaching career in 2004 and has taught all ages in competitive and recreational p...rograms. In addition to her dance training, Effie has had extensive training in gymnastics, developmental gymnastics, figure skating, off-ice training, obtained certifications with Gymnastics Ontario, as well as a post secondary schooling background in Fitness and Health. With a strong passion for dance, Effie continues to take classes, and updates her certifications. She is determined to share her knowledge and pass her love for dance to her students. See more

New Faculty Member Alert Welcome Marina to the KDC family! Marina Di Pelino is a Toronto based artist and teacher and received her BFA in Performance Dance from Ryerson University in 2017. Marina is currently a part of the Toronto Argonauts A-Team. She grew up in the Ottawa area and started dancing at the age of 4 and trained under the direction of Fran Coyle and Monica Adjeleian at the Canadian School of Dance. Marina has attained her advanced level in t...he Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus for Ballet, and also has her advanced levels in Jazz and Tap from the A.D.A.P.T. syllabus. Marina has had the privilege of working with choreographers such as James Kudelka, Teddy Forance, Mia Michaels and more. She has had the opportunity to perform during the 2015 Pan Am Games and during the 2017 & 2018 Grey Cup games with Shania Twain, the Reklaws and Alessia Cara. Also, she has had the opportunity to travel and perform in Greece in the summer of 2016 with a select group of students while studying at Ryerson University.
