For the last two days in class I had the chance to put my theory training into a practical setting for laser tattoo removal! This may have gone up my list of favourite things I've learned while in school for Advanced Clinical Aesthetics. Like with any laser, we choose a wavelength to target a specific chromophore. In the case of Laser Tattoo Removal, we used a 1064 nm laser to target black/dark blue pigment. It goes in and destroys it, breaking it up into a bunch of particles.... These particles then get flushed away during our bodies natural process of elimination over the next 4-6 weeks. Your goal, colour of pigment, type of ink used, how deep the ink was deposited, and how old the tattoo is all take part in how it will respond and how many sessions you will need. Fascinating, isn't it? New service alert! Dermaplaning is a method of manual exfoliation that removes 2-3 weeks worth of dead skin cells. We use a scalpel to refinish the epidermis through controlled scraping. It also has the added benefit of removing vellus hair (peach fuzz)! What are the benefits of dermaplaning? Through controlled scraping, we are able to achieve a deep, even exfoliation, improving skin texture and allowing for better product penetration. Dermaplaning creates a surface injury ...(as do all forms of exfoliation to different extents), which promotes a response within the skin to increase cell turn over rate (the rate at which the skin regenerates itself and sloughs off dead skin cells). In turn, these actions help improve the appearance of fine lines, pores, the overall glow of your skin, and hydration. There are usually three common questions: 1. Will my vellus hair grow back thicker/darker? The answer is, no! It's not possible for your vellus hair to grow back thicker or darker from dermaplaning. While we do cut the hair, the hair structure remains unaltered. 2. Can dermaplaning cause my skin to bleed? Yes! We are using a scalpel, so the risk is always there. However, as long as your technician takes care in their technique the chances are slim. While nicks do happen even with the most experienced technician, usually it will go unnoticed by you! If it does happens, we will always point it out so you're aware and able to keep it clean. 3. Can I buy the blades supplied online/in-store for the general public for DIY? While you definitely can, the results will not be comparable and you may be causing more harm to your skin than good. The blades are not sharp enough to effectively exfoliate while also removing vellus hair. Improper technique leads to scratches and overworked skin; creating more unwanted short term side effects and potentially long term ones too. Post-treatment it is common for your skin to feel warm, flushed, and have a wind-burnt sensation. You may notice redness for a few hours, up to 48 hours depending on sensitivity. I LOVE microdermabrasion. What about you? This non-invasive treatment exfoliates the skin by "polishing" the stratum corneum (top surface). It can exfoliate up to 25 microns of the stratum corneum of your skin! Due to this, whatever is applied post-treatment will be absorbed very quickly and deeply. Microdermabrasion, or micro-resurfacing, is a treatment that can help improve fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture, and colour (great for age spots and post inflammatory hyperpi...gmentation). Using suction along with the abrasion stimulates collagen production over time, as it increases fibroblast activity in the dermis. Most people see an improvement in how smooth and soft their skin is after just the first treatment, but Microdermabrasion is best used in a series of treatments. So, what does our body do to cause these changes? During times of stress our blood is diverted away from the skin to our essential organs. This can lead to a washed out looking complexion.
