We're quick to default to checking our bank account to ensure there's a positive balance but we often don't sit down to be strategic. We want to be curious about money and make it work for us. ... The reason I'm so passionate about financial wellness is because it's crucial for our overall happiness. It isn't that we need to be rich but worry about finances impacts our sleep. No accounts have been breached or data stolen but the CRA is doing this as a safety measure after credentials were found for sale. Please don't see this as a hassle but an opportunity to know your account has been safeguarded. Identity theft or fraud is complex and a long process to remedy. ... Funny enough, March is Fraud Prevention Month in Canada. Do your part to keep your data safe: Don't use the same password for everything Don't use passwords that are easy to crack such as your name123 or other routine patterns Review your bank accounts and credit cards for valid transactions. Check your credit score to see if there are any items you don't know about or have been newly added Think about who you leave your data with. We have credit cards stored with all kinds of companies and service providers so do so with intent. Consider also using small value credit cards when saving it on your profile. The scams become more complex and harder to spot as technology evolves and we have more data outside our own control! I hope you never encounter this situation. Happy Friday! It feels like spring here and I’m dreaming of all things relaxing and vacation like! Today I want to talk about cash flow or why I don’t like to talk about budgets. Budget is a dirty word to a lot of people. It feels restrictive or like one overspend blows it up. Stop doing things that feel like this! We still need good habits but we have to find what resonates with us. This is a positive habit we want to have for life and to share with our children. So I alwa...ys suggest we think about a cash flow forecast. We still need to understand our spending habits. We then want to be conscious about those choices. Look at all your sources of income. Evaluate your spending - needs and wants. There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s yours to control and decide what is important for the happiness and well-being of you and your family. Subtract your expenses from your incomes. Where does that leave you? We want a cushion here to save for fun things, save for emergencies, have money for retirement and other long term goals. You could also include these as buckets within your expenses. Don’t budget if it stresses you out. Find a new way to manage your finances. Organization and information leads to confidence! These are the money skills we truly want our kids to understand. This weekend I want you to consider spending some money locally. It can be big or small but have a conversation in your household about how much money you're going to spend and discuss ways how you might spend it within your community. Ask everyone to share their ideas and take a vote! To me, community is your neighborhood, your town, your city, your province or really your country but knowing that your dollars are supporting someone that you have connected with. You're choos...ing to spend with them. Some suggestions are to order takeout, buy a gift for someone, get your car detailed, have a cleaner come in for spring cleaning, order a cookie decorating kit or hot chocolate bombs, really the list is endless and Instagram makes it so easy to connect with goods and service providers these days! Spend $20 or $200 but talk about what that money means. Your family worked for those funds, you now chose to spend it with someone. That person then buys groceries, other services or goods, or pays for their child's hockey. Money is energy we give and receive so really think about the power it has for good. We live in a world of fear based marketing and I don't like it one bit. You are smart AF. You wouldn't be here otherwise and it really upsets me to talk to women who default to "I'm not good with money" or "I'm not good at math". Both of these are untrue because we can get better at anything we choose. I'm an accountant and don't do math in my head, it's of zero interest to me because I always have my phone close by or I'm playing in Excel anyways. BUT I love money and bein...g strategic with it lights me up. A good professional, expert or coach should meet you at your level and ask you to step up. This should feel like a stretch but worth it!!! You should be nervously excited. If you talk to these people and leave without asking the questions in your head or even worse, regretting that you asked at all, you need to find someone to replace this individual ASAP. We all learn and comprehend in different ways. Our experience with money and life is completely individual and we need to know that when learning and growing. We are less than two months from year end but right now you should be focused on month end. Does that stress you out or you’re on top of your game? My top tips for making month end a breeze: 1 keep all your expenses and invoices organized so they’re available when you’re ready to enter them. 2 use your system’s capabilities to their fullest. If you can automatically add everything from your bank account and take photos of receipts, do it. ... 3 reconcile your bank accounts and credit cards to balance. If you use a system it’ll clearly show you when everything is accounted for or if something is out of balance. If you use Excel, it’s old school cheque book balancing for you. Start with your opening balance (this is your precious month closing balance). Record all your expenses, all your income and your difference should be your transactions for the month. This is your closing balance. Does it match your bank statement? What do you do at month end? This can be for your business and yourself!!
