When looking for places to store things, try to make use of vertical space. In this area of my deck, the firewood logs were never going to be piled more than halfway up this wall, so I installed a wooden shelf painted the same colour as the cabin exterior, and it provides a quick and sheltered place for all the furniture cushions when it rains.
And don't forget to make your door inviting!
Cabin livingroom makeover ...
Amazing what a bit of paint and some new hardware can do!
When chasing down window leaks, ensure the person doing the caulking does not cover up any weeping holes in the frame. These holes are an intentional part of the frame design to channel water out, and covering them up prevents this and water builds up and rots the wood sill. An unexperienced trade person or handyman erroneously thinks these holes are screw holes missing the screws.
Painting the inside of this bookshelf dark blue, hides the slat holes in the shelf strapping by reducing the contrast greatly. It looks so much better than the white it previously was, and it provides an opportunity to put a colour to provide continuity with the palette of the room. I used Benjamin Moore's colour Hale Navy HC154 , but any dark colour would work. Use a matt finish as well to reduce the contrast. I also added puck lights in the top (on a dimmer of course) to add a display area on the top shelf.
The effect of Blue ... I designed a fountain wall at a city house that would accomplish this: https://www.theguardian.com//blue-space-living-near-water-
