Its World Music Therapy Day and March is Music Therapy Month! . Did you know music therapy is a credentialed profession? In Canada, MTAs go through rigorous training and certification, with the intent of providing high quality care. Here is our Canadian Association of Music Therapy's definition of music therapy: . Music therapy is a discipline in which credentialed professionals (MTA*) use music purposefully within therapeutic relationships to support development, health, ...and well-being. Music therapists use music safely and ethically to address human needs within cognitive, communicative, emotional, musical, physical, social, and spiritual domains. If you’ve felt the urge to get up and dance or slow down and sink into the music you’re listening to, you’ve experienced what this did you know is talking about . There are many different ways that music listening can influence our body responses, but today I want to briefly talk about regulating our nervous system after a stress response. By purposefully choosing music that gradually decreases in speed and intensity, we can influence our body responses to stress. As the ...music comes down, so can our breathing, heart rate, and even things like blood pressure and stress hormones. . Music therapists are trained to use music in this way and can work with you to expand how you use music to manage stress. . [Text in the image: Our body responses (breathing, heart rate, movement etc.) can be impacted by and sync up to music. We can use this purposefully to regulate our nervous system.] . . . . #musictherapy #psychotherapy #mentalhealth #wellness #therapist #musictherapist #psychotherapist #guelph #musiclistening #entrainment #rhythmicentrainment #stress #stressmanagement See more

Last week I asked in my instagram stories if I should stick with a cover this month or post an original, and the people have spoken! . Songwriting is one of my favourite ways to connect with myself and express my experiences. To me, 3000 Hours is a song about healing and the growing pains that can come with it. But something I love about art, is that it is open to interpretation. I hope people are able to relate uniquely and connect with the story in their own way. . .... . . . . . . #musictherapy #psychotherapy #mentalhealth #wellness #therapist #musictherapist #psychotherapist #guelph #piano #original #songwriter #songwriting See more

Recently, I heard someone talk about gold star moments -- acknowledging things that we achieved, even if they seem small or insignificant. We are often so focused on our productivity and what we think we SHOULD be doing, that we don’t give weight to what we do accomplish. Some of my gold star moments recently are making a call I’ve been putting off, taking morning off and feeling good about it (!), and exercising the way I wanted to, not the way I felt I should. What are some... of your gold star moments? As a closing thought, just a little reminder to be kind to yourself. We are living in crazy times and there is a good chance you are doing better than you think you are! . . . . . . . . #musictherapy #psychotherapy #mentalhealth #wellness #therapist #musictherapist #psychotherapist #guelph

KS Therapy Services is now offering lesson packages, both for online and in-person lessons! I offer piano, voice, and songwriting lessons . What is a therapeutic music lesson? It is much like a traditional lesson, just adapted to suit your interests and needs. Learning a new skill or continuing to expand an existing one can be daunting and is not a "one size fits all" experience. Because of my background in music therapy and music education, Ispecialize in adaptingthe c...urriculum to suit eachindividual, their learning style, and what they want to achieve musically. . While our main goal in therapeutic music lessons is music education, this can also be an opportunity to build self-esteem, experience a sense of accomplishment and explore meaningful creative outlets. Participating in regular activities such as music lessons can also help re-establish a regular routine and provide a sense of purpose. . For more information on therapeutic music lessons and lesson packages, visit the website in bio or contact me! . . . . . . . . #musictherapy #psychotherapy #mentalhealth #wellness #therapist #musictherapist #psychotherapist #guelph #piano #singing #songwriting #musiceducation See more

Dropping anchor has become a favourite grounding technique since learning it in my Acceptance and Commitment Therapy course. The intent is to help connect with the present moment, so we don’t get swept away in the proverbial emotional storm. With practice, dropping anchor can help us to engage in what matters like being present with people we care about or using helpful coping strategies, even if we are not feeling the way we want to. It is not meant to get rid of our unwante...d thoughts and feelings, but to drop the struggle with them and regain control of our actions. . Dropping anchor is especially helpful when feeling emotionally overwhelmed and caught up in our thoughts and feelings. It can also be used anytime as a mindfulness practice. You might find it helpful to turn off auto-pilot, focus attention, or become more aware of what is happening in your mind and body. . . . . . . . . #musictherapy #psychotherapy #mentalhealth #wellness #therapist #musictherapist #psychotherapist #guelph #act #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #act #droppingtheanchor #grounding #anxiety See more
