Pride Week Day 1! To kick off Pride Week we want to talk about ways we can be better allies. Swipe for some tips on how you can be a better ally. 1. Uplift the most marginalized in the community... For example, black queer voices, trans voices, black trans voices, queer sex worker voices, etc. An emphasis on intersectionality. 2. Be a listener, be open-minded, and be willing to talk. 3. Understand the adversities LGBTQ people face Learn about the daily and lived experiences of queer people. The Williams Institute writes that lesbian, gay, and bisexual employees are much more likely to report being fired from a job or denied a position in relation to straight peers. 4. Make room for LGBTQ people to exist Do your best to support the community in multiple ways. Make room for queer artists, queer educators, queer dancers, etc. This could look like purchasing art work from queer artists, or raising awareness about queer educators. 5. Don't assume that everyone around you are straight Someone close to you could be looking for support in their coming-out process. Not making assumptions about their sexual orientation may help to give them the space they need. 6. If someone comes out to you, do not share their story It takes bravery to come out. Just because they were comfortable coming out to you does not mean that they are ready to tell everyone. 7. Do more than just show up for Pride Pride parades/parties have become very commercialized. Think about queer issues and discrimination not just on pride or during pride month, but all year round. 8. Confront your own prejudices and bias, even if it is uncomfortable to do so.
