While many large companies cut their COVID pay-premium to their employees last summer, Martha and I continue to pay our employees a 15% shift premium on every shift. Yes, sales have been up because of the pandemic, and we believe it's only fair to share the benefit of that bump with the people who make it possible - our staff. Just one more reason to support your local independently owned grocery store.

We've had a request from a customer for some fresh Malqeque Oysters. These are fresh from PEI and there's 100 to the case. I'll have 4 dozen available for Friday at $18/doz. Let us know if you'd like us to reserve some for you! First come, first served.

Customers using us to ship parcels via FedEx should be aware that among the hazardous substances that we are not allowed to accepted here at our location are biological substances. As such, we are not permitted to handle health care related testing samples. For alternate arrangements FedEx can be contacted directly at 1-800-463-3339 or you can visit the FedEx Ship Centre at 97 Binnington Court, in Kingston. Thank you for your understanding as these rules are set by FedEx.

In order to assist with personnel scheduling during the stay-at-home order we will be closing at 6PM on Friday nights until May 14th. We will resume our 8PM closing time for the Victoria Day Weekend. Thank you for your understanding as we ensure that we have the right personnel in the store at the right times in order to make your shopping trip efficient and safe.

As of tomorrow our store capacity drops from 24 shoppers to 12. Please, plan on shopping alone unless you have a young child and can't find someone to watch them. If the store is busy and you live close by please come back when the store is less busy. Please make a list before you shop and try to reduce the number of visits you make to the store in a week. Also, at this time we ask that only people living in the area on a continuous basis shop in the store. We simply cannot accommodate everyone if people coming for short stays try to shop with us (not to mention that the province is asking us not to undertake any unnecessary travel). We appreciate your understanding in these trying times and please remember that the vast majority of our staff have not been vaccinated and continue to assume personal risk in order to serve you.

I have written the following letter to Dr. Paula Stewart at the The Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit regarding the unsafe work conditions that my employees have been facing for the last year, and continue to face on a daily basis. At this point we still have no firm timeline on when we can expect to be vaccinated and I am concerned that if Public Health officials do not move fast enough, at some point the store will end up closing for a period of time as the var...iants continue to spread. If this letter seems alarmist, it's because I am very alarmed. Good afternoon Dr. Stewart: I've just been chatting with Minister Steve Clark and he says that if you follow the provincial guidelines you could choose to vaccinate grocery workers right now. He also says that he has asked you to protect the food security of his constituents by vaccinating essential grocery workers but you refuse. As it stands I'm delivering groceries to people's homes that have the disease with nothing to protect me except a mask and distancing. On top of that my staff are dealing with an influx of seasonal residents coming mostly from hot spots. Are you going to wait until there's an outbreak and stores start closing to take action, or do I have to threaten to close my store - until we're vaccinated - under a refusal to accept unsafe work? Name me one other industry where workers are knowingly in the proximity of people who have COVID and yet aren't vaccinated. I remind you that I am the only grocery store serving this community and there would be many people harmed by my closing whether by choice or by public health order. The time to protect essential workers, and the time to ensure the security of the food supply is now. Sincerely, Neil Kudrinko

Despite putting our health at risk every day to serve our community, most of our staff are still waiting for their turn to get vaccinated. One of our produce suppliers was overstocked on yellow and orange tomatoes. We've been able to pass these along at $1.49/lb. Less than half the price of our red hot house tomatoes! Besides the difference in colour you'll typically find yellow and orange tomatoes to be less acidic than red varieties. Give them a try this weekend!
