Don’t miss conversation with Nelson, BC based artist Deborah Thompson this Friday (June 28th) at 4pm at the Kunze Gallery! If you can’t make it, you can view Thompson’s work at the Kunze Gallery until September. We look forward to sharing this dialogue with you! - Deborah Thompson is a contemporary visual artist, educator and curator. She spent her childhood in Toronto, Ontario College of Art and Design (University) from which she graduated in 1984. After that, she followed h...er passion for teaching spending two decades working in Outdoor and Leadership Education which took her to remote pockets of North America and Africa. On route, she received a BA in Southwest Cultural Studies from Prescott College in Arizona. She returned to her art practice full time in 1996, where she completed and MFA in Visual Art from the University of Montana. For the past two decades she has lived in Nelson, BC where her studio practice has been focused on painting and drawing with a focused interest in exploring sculptural mediums. Her work today investigates psychological narratives and their relationship to mythology and depth psychology. She has a love of Medieval art and mysticism. She has won several awards for both her studio and curatorial work including the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, Osprey foundation and Canadian Museum Association. She has had many solo exhibitions in the public galleries around British Columbia. She has taught painting and drawing at the University of Montana, Kootenay School of the Arts at Selkirk College and the Oxygen Art Centre (of which she is a founding member). She has been a teacher in various capacities since 1980 and continues to love working with people. See more

ARTIST TALK: SATURDAY, MAY 18th, 4PM! Join us at 4pm on May 18th! The Kunze Gallery is excited to host Victoria-based artist Gina Chase and welcome all to join us for an artist talk tomorrow (Saturday May 18th) at 4pm. Gina Chase is invested in an exploration of line, shape, colour and form, and has a meditative approach to her artistic practice. Often placing constraints and restrictions to her process, Chase allows these confinements to overcome her conscious self during h...er process, eliminating an awareness of the hand and conscious decision-making until approaching the end of the work. Gina Chase makes art for the eye and the non-intellectual part of the brain. Creating a direct statement is not important to Chase's work, and rather is focused on the way colour, line, shape, and pattern may manipulate the sensibility of a work to initiate a meditative space for the viewer to enter. Her works engage the eye, allowing for a constant movement through the work, never settling at a specific landing point. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow, and welcoming Gina Chase to the Creston Valley.
