One of Marieke's many, many great days on the water this summer!
Woohoo! Great pictures Marieke!
My wonderful cousins Michael and Martin Winkel are arborists. They took down some trees threatening the house and cabin. Mike took some pictures high up in the tree he took down. Thanks for all the hard work!
This is what Marieke is up to... See the photo credit on the top image? She loves her job with Mackay Whale Watching, and phones us with wildlife reports regularly.
Jim Frantz on Albedos shares this view of our home. The evening was breathtaking. Thank you Jim!
About a Hourston and an artist: For 24 years in the Broughtons our 17 foot Hourston has been our vehicle. This boat transported small babies in car seats, thousands of pounds of lumber from Bill Proctor's mill, groceries, laundry machines and mattresses. It has carried us safely for countless of trips to Port McNeill and late at night on our way back home from Halloween celebrations in Echo Bay. We love this boat. The Hourston is at the end of its life and we are remodeling a different run-about. Imagine our delight when artist Sarah Gayle gave us this painting. It is an incredibly wonderful gift; thank you Sarah!
Captain Jim Ingalls (The I's have it) captured our beautiful evening.
To our neighbours in Port McNeill, you may have noticed a young Grey Whale has been hanging out in front of town. Increased vigilance needed as the whale may su...rface very unpredictably. Please see www.SeeABlowGoSlow.org - it's a resource intended for boaters to be safe and responsible and for those viewing from shore to also know the marine mammal regulations if they believe they see violations (100 m minimum must be maintained from Grey Whales, if whale is resting or that possibly something is wrong, greater distance is needed). Great thanks to those who made sure we knew about the whale. Photo Marieke Knierim, May 19, taken from shore (telephoto and cropped). See more
Yay! Spring is here! The weather has been spectacular. We are getting ready for the summer season. Low tide means working on the beach lines this morning.
The Nations of the Broughton have made the commitment to heal wild salmon by getting rid of the salmon farms using their territories. Three took a path to gain... authority over the industry and a fourth chose a legal path we will hear more about later this week -strength in diversity! For the 1st time EVER, there has been real progress meaningful to the wild salmon themselves, not just words. We can all be grateful to the Broughton nations for showing us that salmon farms can be removed from this coast. A Marine Harvest/MOWI farm is still sitting at Glacier Falls, but the Atlantic salmon are gone forever, and it is being dismantled... Gila'kasla. Thank you: April Bencze for this beautiful video Tavish Campbell for many of the salmon images and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for being remarkable allies through this.
