Our teams found these bottles in a camp in Bangladesh this week. This is an example of why bottles should never be distributed in emergencies. The bacteria from... bottles in these situations can cause illness, malnutrition, and death. There just isn't enough resources available to keep the bottles clean and sterile. NPI teams are working with families on breastfeeding support, relactation, wetnursing, and cup feeding to prevent illness and malnutrition that bottle use in these situations can cause. This shows why breastfeeding needs to be protected, promoted, and supported in all emergency situations. Our teams work with families to inform and support the safest infant feeding options possible. We work to educate communities on infant nutrition and childhood illness caused by unsafe feeding practices such as the use of bottles like these. Breastfeeding doesn't look the same for every family. Cup Feeding is an excellent alternative when feeding directly at the breast... isn't an option. Revised CDC guidelines for breastfeeding and influenza. Spoiler alert: "Should mothers continue breastfeeding if they have flu or come in contact with someone ...with flu? Yes. A mother’s breast milk contains antibodies and other immunological factors that can help protect her infant from flu and is the recommended source of nutrition for the infant, even while the mother is ill.
