Fixed Interest Rates Are Rising The bond market is what drives and sets fixed interest rates. Since January 4th, the 5 year bond has nearly doubled. Because of this, mortgage lenders moved quickly and have increased their fixed interest rate products. For example, a 5 year fixed a week ago was widely seen at 1.89% and is now around 2.09%. This is up .20% and up to .25% in some cases. On the contrary, lenders are offering deeper discounts on new variable rate mortgage products. 1.55% and below are the standard at the moment.
