In the past few weeks, this is probably the most common questions I’ve been asked. The simple answer: let’s test your levels first. Vitamin D has been shown to have many amazing benefits including: supporting calcium and phosphorus absorption, facilitating normal immune system functioning and reducing severity of seasonal affective disorder/low moods in the winter. ... While most people in Canada are deficient in Vitamin D, we don’t know what amount of supplementation is best until we do a blood test and see where you’re starting at. You can get a requisition from your ND or MD. If you are taking Vitamin D already, make sure you’re taking it with food. It is a fat soluble vitamin and this will ensure proper absorption. #nutrientspotlight #burlon #vitamind #burlingtonnaturopath #balanceintegrativehealth

Secure video or phone consultation options are available to anyone in Ontario who is ready to work towards their health goals. My patients doing virtual appointments love not having to run around and pick things up as well as the convenience of doing their appointments on their ...lunch break or once they get home without needing to arrange childcare. We don’t give our guts enough credit. What happens there can impact our: *neurotransmitter production, affecting our mood *immune system functioning ... *hormone metabolism, conversion and detox *nutrient absorption So if you’re not feeling like yourself, let’s take a look at what’s going on in your gut to see if it’s the cause. #burlon #burlingtonnaturopath #digestivehealth #bloating #ibs Posted @withregram @drlynnend What happens in the gut will impact your entire body, including your mental health. That’s not an overstatement. It’s a fact. The gut is where we produce really important neurotransmitters for good mental health. Serotonin, dopamine, GABA. These are all so important to help us feel happy and calm. The gut is also where most of our immune system is. When our GI tract is not functioning optimally our immune system won’t be able to be optimal either. We also process, metabolize, and convert a lot of hormones in the gut. Estrogen gets detoxed and thyroid hormones get converted from T4 to T3 in the GI tract. Always consider gut health when balancing hormones. And we activate and produce vitamins and nutrients in our GI tract as well, thanks to those good little bugs (microbiome). Thiamine, folate, biotin, riboflavin, and panthothenic acid are just a few to name. I could keep going but you get the point. What happens in the gut doesn’t stay in the gut. I’d suggest you start looking at your poop every morning, and tracking how your GI tract feels. It might be key to helping you balance hormones or supporting your anxiety. - - - - #hormonalbalance #sibo #functionalmedicine #estrogenexcess #periodproblems #endometriosis #hypothyroidism #hormonalimbalances #acne #acneproblems #sibo #guthealthmatters #anxiety #depression #mentalhealthsupport

When putting together a treatment plan for PCOS, we always work to determine what underlying imbalances may be contributing to your experience and causing anovulation, polycystic ovaries, and/or elevated androgens. - Insulin-Resistant PCOS: High insulin and leptin impact ovulation and stimulate the ovaries to make testosterone. - Post-pill PCOS: The pill suppresses ovulation which can be temporary for many women. However, in some, this reduced ovulation can continue on...ce the pill is stopped. - Inflammatory PCOS: Inflammation from causes such as stress, environmental toxins and digestive imbalances impacts ovulation, hormone receptors and stimulates adrenal androgen production. - Adrenal PCOS: Can have regular ovulation and normal testosterone but elevated adrenal androgens (DHEAS). #pcosawareness #burlon #hormoneimbalance #burlingtonaturopath #womenshealth From: https://www.larabriden.com/treatment-for-4-types-of-pcos-/ See more

Bloatingit is one of the most common symptoms I hear from patients. For some, it gradually builds up throughout the day, others notice it mostly after meals and some seem to not be able to pinpoint any pattern whatsoever. The cause of bloating is often linked to either digestive disturbances (low stomach acid and enzyme production, imbalances in the gut flora, food sensitivities, SIBO, etc) or hormone imbalances (estrogen dominance, progesterone deficiencies, PCOS, etc). If you’re feeling bloated and are ready to determine the root cause, connect with me for a free 15-meet and greet!

This is a conversation I have with many patients who are on the pill and have other health concerns. It is so important to make sure you’re getting enough vitamins and minerals for your body to function well and to understand things that may impact your nutrient status. Whether you’re on the pill and want to prevent deficiencies or are ready to come off it, let’s chat and make sure you’re body is supported so you can feel your best! #burlon #hormonehealth #birthcontrolpill ...#womenshealth #fertility #healthymood - Posted @withregram @avivaromm Hormonal birth control pills can deplete numerous nutrients, both while you’re on it, and when coming off of it (this is the case with Vitamin D). This is a problem because most of us, according to CDC studies, are already low in these nutrients, and others, and this can have an impact on our wellbeing, hormonal health, mental health, and more. Let’s just look - briefly - at our cycles, fertility, and mood: High homocysteine blood levels are associated with low folate/folic acid levels, low luteal phase progesterone, and a 33% increase in likelihood of anovulation, while higher levels of folate are associated with higher progesterone levels. Low ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is associated with reduced ovarian function and progesterone levels, which can affect mood and fertility; a study that found that when women were supplemented with ascorbic acid their progesterone levels rose, their luteal phases lengthened, and their pregnancy rates increased. Women with low B12/folate have increased risk of recurrent miscarriage, and low B12 can cause depression. Low Vitamin E is connected with increased risk of not ovulating. Low Vitamin B6 has been found in women with miscarriage and prenatal nausea + vomiting, and is associated with PMS symptoms + depression. Vitamin D plays a role in helping women conceive with IVF. Low selenium not only impacts the thyroid, which can affect fertility, but is associated with increased miscarriage risk, and can cause postpartum depression.

Dr. Kristin Wootton, ND 02.12.2019

This is a great analogy! Hormones are the chemical messengers of our body so when the communication is off, so many other areas can be impacted. When looking at symptoms and investigating, we always strive to find the hormones which are throwing things off and work on balancing them first so an optimal performance can happen. #burlon #burlingtonnaturopath #hormonehealth #womenshealth #hormonebalance #adrenalfatigue #pms #fertility #perimenopause #menopause

Here are the answers for those curious to know which herbs I posted earlier this week. Herbs have a variety of health benefits depending on how you use them. - Chives: can help to improve digestion and are high in antioxidants (a great addition to omelettes, scrambled eggs and potatoes). - Rosemary: can improve blood circulation and enhance memory due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (delicious when used with garlic on sweet potato wedges). ... - Parsley: a natural diuretic. Also rich in vitamin A,C, and K. This is following an amendment of Directive #2 by Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, allowing a gradual restart of deferred and non-essential services by regulated health professionals. - I’ve been working hard to ensure the clinic meets all the requirements set out by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, with your health and safety in mind.... - I’ll share more information in the coming days, but here are some things you can expect on your next visit: Virtual appointments will continue to be an option available to all patients. All patients with an in-person appointment will be pre-screened. Returning visitors will see some changes around the clinic including: new hand sanitizing stations, updates to the reception area to improve physical distancing, the use of various personal protective equipment, and more frequent disinfecting of clinic surfaces. - If you are a current patient, you can expect to hear more details on how we be working to protect your health and safety during your visit and how to schedule an appointment. I will also be contacting patients on the waitlist to get them on the schedule as soon as the clinic is ready. - If you would like to be added to our contact list, send us a private message with your email or send us a note at [email protected] - For more information and to schedule an appointment, visit www.kristinwootton-nd.ca - Thank you all for your patience and support over the past few months. I’ve missed seeing you and am looking forward to getting back to helping you feel your best!

I am a big fan of keeping things simple and realistic. After all, taking steps to feel better and improve your quality of life shouldn’t become overwhelming. Everything starts with a small step, and then another. - With all the sunshine and warm weather lately, I’ve been trying to stay on top of drinking more water and getting outside for a walk. I know when I do those things consistently I have more energy and motivation. - What are you doing today to feel better tomorro...w? #burlon #mondaymotivation #burlingtonnaturopath #smallsteps #realisticgoals

As I posted earlier this week, there are so many health concerns that could indicate your hormones are out of balance. Many of you have asked what the next step would be if you’re suspecting a hormonal imbalance. - Part of what I love about my job is being able to be your health detective by looking at your health concerns, health history, family history and certain tests to determine what is causing your symptoms. This allows us to put together a treatment plan that best fi...ts what you need. Sometimes it is simple for us to determine why you’re not feeling your best (ex: you’re watching TV before bed and feeling tired in the morning), and sometimes it’s less straightforward. - Having access to different types of hormone testing can be a helpful tool to determine which treatments might be best for you. All types of testing come with advantages and disadvantages so we choose the different ones based on what levels we want to look at and what pathways we want to investigate based on the discussion at your initial appointment. - If you’re interested in seeing what a sample report of the saliva or urine testing looks like, send me a message and I can share one with you. Hormones are one of my favourite things to talk about, and they are way more than just Estrogen and Testosterone! They body produces and secretes over 40 different hormones that act as chemical messengers and essentially tell our bodies when to do what. They regulate many functions like growth, reproduction, metabolism, energy, and mood. When they are doing their job well, we can feel great. However, when their levels get out of balance we can start to see many areas of our ...body and health become impacted. - Although some of the more common symptoms hormonal imbalance are pictured here, this is not an exhaustive list. There are many others that may also indicate the need to assess levels and better support the body. - Do you frequently experience any or the symptoms here? If so, it may be time to take a look at what your hormones are doing! #burlon #burlingtonnaturopath #hormonalhealth #hormonebalance #womenshealth See more

It’s not always easy to figure out why you’re feeling tired . Sometimes the cause can be related to lifestyle (dehydration, low activity, etc) but sometimes it can be a sign of something else. When working with patients suffering from fatigue, I focus on figuring out why they are tired which, can sometimes include various tests to get a deeper look into how their body is functioning. - Bloodwork : helps us to determine if there are nutrient deficiencies, thyroid or blood su...gar imbalances impacting your health. We don’t just look at if you’re in the range, but where you are in the range. - Saliva or Urine testing : a great way to look at cortisol (our stress hormone) levels throughout the day as well as investigate estrogen, progesterone and testosterone balance. Kits are done by patients at home and sent to the lab. - Although these are the most common tests for fatigue, I don’t always run every test for everyone. We’ll look at your health history and symptom pattern to determine which tests may best guide the development of your treatment plan. - If you have questions about the above testing or want to learn more about how to combat your fatigue, connect with me for a free 15 minute meet and greet (pm or email [email protected]). Last week I asked my Facebook community what topics they wanted to learn more about. One of the most popular responses was Low Energy/Fatigue. It’s also one of the most common symptoms that new patients have. There are many different reasons why you might be feeling tired from poor hydration to hormone imbalances. I find when I’m not staying active my energy and mood dip. By looking at when you’re feeling tired , your health history and possibly doing some testing , we can gain insight into the cause of your fatigue. Keep an eye out over the next week for some of the most common tests I look at for patients with low energy. If you’re ready to take the next step, connect with me for a free 15-minute meet and greet (www.kristinwootton-ND.ca)

Have you seen the updated Clean 15 /Dirty 12 from the @environmentalworkinggroup? The foods in the Dirty 12 are found to have higher amounts of pesticides . Those pesticides can have impacts on our well-being including hormonal health and immune function. Since buying all organic produce can add up quickly, I use this guide to make informed choices about when it is best to buy organic produce vs not. Do you buy organic produce? #burlingtonnd #healthyeating #foodasfuel #organicproduce #clean15dirtydozen

Here is my Healthy Habits Checklist! Earlier this week, I talked about starting small - focus on 1-2 things you would like to add into your routine and let things grow from there. I've been focusing on movement and mindfulness lately. What have you been prioritizing? Are there any healthy habits you would add to the list?

Dr. Kristin Wootton, ND 21.03.2019

Health Tip: Having a hard time fitting new habits into your weekly routine? Instead of feeling like you need to do everything all at once, start by choosing one thing to slowly integrate into your routine (ex: add one extra glass of water each day, when you get to doing it daily, continue to add another glass until you reach 8-10/day!). Once it becomes consistent, focus on adding in the next habit. Over time, you plant heathy habit seeds that will slowly allow your healthy h...abits to grow and become part of a more sustainable lifestyle. So, whether you’re looking to increase water intake, eat more vegetables, practice meditations or do more activity, start with small, realistic goals so you can stick with it! If you’re not sure which healthy habits you want to add in, keep and eye out for my Healthy Habit Checklist I’ll be sharing in the coming days.

Health Tip: Check in with yourself every hour! This is something I talk about with every patient. It is easy to get caught up in our day and forget to listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us. Make it a habit to stop every hour and ask your body what it needs its often as simple as having a glass of water if you’re thirsty, grabbing a sweater if you’re cold or taking a few deep breaths to slow down. What do you do to check-in with yourself throughout the day? #healthtip #burlon #naturalhealth #burlonnaturopath #healthyliving #deepbreath #selfcare

I often talk to my patients about using food as fuel. Just as sugar can cause inflammation in our bodies, there are many foods that can help our tissues repair and provide important nutrients to help us stay healthy. Here are some of the nutrients I've been focusing on getting from my foods lately.
