A song from the past that was recently uncovered. It deserves to be heard. Travel on back to 1999 with me, and help me figure out what the hell I was thinking.

Mortars Track 7: "The Next Round" The last song recorded for the album (it was recorded last Thursday, in about forty minutes) came from the idea that this "album" needed a bridge between song six (a real rock/punky banger), and the final track (a rocker, but nowhere near six). This one came specifically from the drum track. It all started there. Things continued to build and build until we got to what you're hearing (the last 1/3 of the song). The title was born first, and t...he lyrics are born from it. It's about finding ways to circumvent the days of emotion and physical pain as we battle through Primary Progressive MS. Finding ways for our lives to be as "normal" as possible as we settle into the idea of not letting it beat us down. Using our love to rely on each other, talk to each other, push doctors and specialists to our way of thinking. It's not all going to work, hell, a lot of the time it ends up in a flood of emotion, but we can't stop pushing ourselves, we can never give in to it. "Let's keep Swinging From the Trees / Let's Keep Aiming for the Next Round" Mortars will be available in September on Spotify, iTunes, and Bandcamp.

Logan the drum "machine" (a preset on GarageBand) is the only other being that has worked with me on this project. He's put up with me changing his fills, telling him to switch styles, and sometimes just taking out his loop completely. Without his patience and hammering style, who knows where I'd be! The one thing that annoys me more than anything else is a double cymbal fill. He tries to do it all the time, and a few of them have snuck into the album. DAMN (Automated) DRUMMERS!

The only song that appears on Mortars/Bricks, is "Lost on Display". It was originally recorded in 2017 as a challenge to myself to see if I was still able to write solo, and it came out much better than expected. The track has been re-recorded to nearly twice the speed of the original, which has ratcheted up the intensity near the ending as the lyrics push to understand the heart. While the lyrics remain the same, I see each version having different context. The "Bricks" ver...sion relates to being scared of your own feelings and opening your heart up to love. "Mortars" is more about finding yourself after a diagnosis of Primary Progressive MS changes your life. How the two of you battle through your own feelings and as you begin to open up to each other, things start to make sense. In 2012, I was struggling to find myself as a musician. Writing and recording music over the last year and trying to figure out what I was going to do with all of it, I kept thinking, "is this really worth it? what am I going to get out of this?" The lyrics of that time were mostly written about other people. People I could lean on, people that helped me get through things over that time, and people that had let me down. Slathered in metaphors, too. Can't make it that obvious.... And as I continued to pour out the feelings I had in me, I took this picture in my roommate's ol' basement. Because I was brooding, and trying to find an image that would suit the material. It kinda worked, I think. A year later, I released "Steady Streams of Noise" on bandcamp (see link in profile) and felt pretty accomplished. So brooding isn't always terrible.. #ThrowbackThursday

Want to hear something? A sneak peek of the track "Heart On," originally recorded to be the lead-off single of "Mortars". But as things progressed, neither the track's sound nor its message fit within the boundaries I was trying to create. This track will appear on "Bricks", available to those who purchase the album through bandcamp.
