I made these copper earrings today. They’re rough but I think I like the raw look to them. I have a semi-outdoor studio and I haven’t been able to work in it the last few months because I don’t do well in the cold, but as of this month I’ve been able to get back to it. . This year I’m going to focus more on metal sculptural work and some jewelry (and not neglect my botanical series, it’s something I’m always working on here and there) . Copper had always been my favourite m...etal, plus it’s soft and easy to work with. I think I’m going to stick with it. . . . . . #copper #jewelry #copperjewelry #handmade #handmadejewelry #makersgonnamake #earrings #earcandy #bohemian #boho #woodlandmystic #handcrafted #jewelrymaker #earthvibe See more

Fringecup (Tellima grandiflora) is a tall (40-80cm) mid-late spring flower, native to the PNW. This plant would be boiled into a tea and used to treat lack of appetite and other illnesses by the Skagit. . . . .... . #pnw #pnwwonderland #cascades #botanical #botany #macro_brilliance #macro #nativeplants #pnwplants #nativeflowers #flora #flor #fleur #fringecup #tellima #moody_nature See more

Bouquet of Ferns. Creating the long orange borders in this piece drove me nuts and I nearly threw in the towel quite a few times. I’m glad I pushed on. . Bouquet of Ferns is my digital collage made from scans of fern illustrations by botanist Sir William Jackson Hooker. The original illustrations were first published in 1831. Here’s one of the pages from the book which I used for the corner frame. . .... . . . . #botany #botanist #hookersgreen #homage #homageart #collage #digitalcollage #tapestry #silkprint #fern #ferns #plantsmakepeoplehappy #bouquetofferns #intheforest #fernart #cbcarts #artgallery #artmuseum #contemporaryart #canadianart #biodiversityheritagelibrary #sciart #biodiversity

Bouquet of Ferns archival pigment print on silk, 67.5 x 46. . I created this by digitally manipulating and repeating bits and pieces of scans of illustrations published in a book of ferns from 1831. The original drawings were by botanist Sir William Jackson Hooker. For you painters, you may have encountered a Hookers Green colour which is named after this botanist. . .... . . . . #botany #botanist #hookersgreen #homage #homageart #collage #digitalcollage #tapestry #silkprint #fern #ferns #bouquetofferns #intheforest #fernart #cbcarts #artgallery #artmuseum #contemporaryart #canadianart #biodiversityheritagelibrary #sciart #biodiversity See more

I am showing my botanical of Ocean spray (Holodiscus discolor) in a virtual exhibition with @the_nature_of_cities (link in my bio: TNOC Virtual Exhibition) along with 37 other artists from around the world. . This shrub is also called Ironwood. The hardwood was used as pegs in construction when nails were not available. It can also be made harder by heating it over fire, so it's great for using as tongs, digging sticks, and other tools and utensils. . When the flowers are in... full bloom I love to run the blossoms through my hand since they feel quite soft. . . . . . #oceanspray #holodiscus #pnw #pnwplants #botanical #plantsonblack #summerdays #naturefeelsgood #lostinthewoods #forestbathing #botanicalart #plantsnap See more

I created this artwork for the rotunda floor at the Cultural Centre in Richmond. The inner perimeter shows the edges of a nursery stump, with the forest floor and all the new life growing around it. When you stand within the center of the artwork you are in a sense the new growth sprouting from the remains of this once mighty tree. While there may be feelings of sadness in seeing a fallen tree, it’s important to remember that though it may no longer be living, it still has an important role in allowing life to thrive. Each panel is 72" long x 48" wide.

I am very excited to announce that I will be exhibiting a new, interactive project this November 8, 9, and 10 at VIVO Media arts for the Collisions Festival: In...vasive Systems put on by the @curiositycollider. For this project I’ve been collaborating with Dr. Scott Pownall of the Open Science Network (OSN) to sequence the DNA of invasive plants which I will convert to music. This music will play on a hand crank music box that I am building myself at @Makerlabs. Here are a few behind the scenes of the work in progress. There will some amazing work by eight other artists on the theme invasive systems. Those artists are: @furiebeckite @joannehastie @katwadel @dzeelouise @twyla.exner @edziumusic Christian Dahlberg Chris Dunnett I will also be leading a workshop with Dr. Scott Pownall on DNA Sonification where we will be sharing our process for creating this project. You will learn the process of DNA barcoding, and how to sonify DNA sequences with basic music theory and MIDI freeware. No experience necessary and space is limited to 12 participants. Early bird tickets for the festival or workshop are available until OCTOBER 8 so please buy them now: https://collisionsfestival2019.eventbrite.ca/ Opening reception: Friday Nov 8, 7pm-12pm at 2625 Kaslo St, Vancouver, BC (@vivomediaarts) More info about the festival: https://curiositycollider.org/collisions-festival-invasive/ I hope to see some of you there!
