Did you know the entire pea plant is edible? It gets fibrous and tough as it gets older, but the young shoots are tender and packed with nutrition and are a particularly good source of vitamin C and iron as well as folates, antioxidants and carotene. Eat them raw, chop into a salad, add to a sandwich or soup. They are very versatile. We are in St. Charles. Send me a message if you would like to pick some up from the self-serve farm gate fridge where there are a few other tasty farm products too. $5/bag

We eat eggs from pretty happy hens who get to forage in a really big area, and are fed some grain and appropriate scraps from our kitchen. The kids get to care for them and learn about the cycle of life. Many have names: Cheeky, Storm Slippers, Spotted Trouble, Sweetie Mr. Cockadoodledoo ... There are a few that are so old they are just the matriarchs of the flock now. They also like to eat bugs and larvae in the orchard, but aren’t nearly as effective as the guinea hens a...nd ducks. We use their composted manure and bedding in some of the gardens. Raising them the way we do takes longer and so it costs more. In selling the surplus we are just trying to cover our costs. It’s not a money maker for us. Having said all of that, after about 4 months of no surplus, this year’s chicks have started to lay. If you would like to be on our very small list of egg buyers, let me know. $5/dozen farm gate in St Charles. I have four dozen extra from this week.
