Tune in NOW through https://www.mun.ca/ to witness the incredible, brilliant, and inspiring Elders Jean Crane and Nellie Winters receive their honorary doctorates at this Special Convocation of @MemorialU in Labrador!

Labrador Institute 28.12.2020

Today marks a historic day: the first-ever Special Convocation of Memorial University is being held in Labrador, to honour two incredible, inspiring, and path-breaking Inuit women, Elders Jean Crane and Nellie Winters. We could not be more thrilled to honour Inuit Elder, artist, healer, and community advocate, Jean Crane, as well as prolific artist, garment designer, and seamstress, Nellie Winters. These two women have contributed so much to Labrador communities, society, art...s, culture, and wellness. This Convocation is very special. Not only because it is the first in Labrador, but because it is the first Convocation President Vianne Timmons has held as President of Memorial University. And, it's back in her home in Labrador. A strong woman, honouring strong women, is the way of the North. It is also extremely significant because it is honouring two Inuit Elders and leaders, in Labrador, connected to their lands and waters. This event celebrates their awe-inspiring accomplishments and highlights their perseverance, passion, and power -- and their utter brilliance. Finally, it's significant because it is a beautiful blend of Memorial University Convocation ceremonial procedures, and Inuit and Innu culture. For the first time, there will be a land welcome from Dr. Elizabeth Penashue, a kullik lighting, Inuit drumming, and Inuit musicians to celebrate. Dr. Ashlee Cunsolo, Dean of the School of Arctic and Subarctic Studies, will be joining the Memorial delegation on stage, and will provide some brief remarks. For Dr. Cunsolo, finding the words to honour such incredible Elders and women as Jean Crane and Nellie Winters is a humbling privilege. All of us at the Labrador Institute look forward to celebrating these incredible women this afternoon. Again, tune in TODAY (Thursday, January 21, 2021), at 1pm AST/1:30pm NST to https://www.mun.ca/ to watch the livestream, or to watch the recording after the event. Nakummek.

Such an inspiring, informative meeting this morning at Labrador Affairs Secretariat with Dr. Ashlee Consolo, interim dean of Memorial’s School of Arctic and Sub... Arctic Studies of the Labrador Institute earlier today. There are incredible things happening around higher learning in Labrador, most of which are being led by this internationally renowned researcher and leader. The prospect of the current academic unit transitioning in the future to the establishment of a new campus of Memorial University in Labrador will be transformative on every level. There is so much to be optimistic about even in those challenging time’s. #bythenorth #forthenorth #opportunity

Thanks so much to Minister Lisa Dempster and Michelle Watkins, Franca Smith, and Allan Bock from Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs for making the time to learn about the new School of Arctic & Subarctic Studies, the plans for a Labrador Campus of Memorial University, and the Pye Centre for Northern Boreal Food Systems. Such an honour and privilege to speak with you about this growth and development of Memorial University in Labrador, and to have such an inspiring conversation on a Saturday about Northern sovereignty over post-secondary education in Labrador. We are lucky to have you as Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs, Indigenous Affairs and Reconciliation, and Status of Women! Looking forward to working with you and your team going forward.
