The town of Misnébalam is a mere 32 km. by road south of La casa del Renan. Misnébalam was once part of a thriving henequen industry and once had a suggested population of about 170 inhabitants however, it was mostly abandoned by the turn of the century. In 2000 approximately 20 people lived near Misnébalam however, the town centre has been deserted. It is believed that Misnébalam is haunted (most actively) by a young boy named Juliancito who committed suicide after being ass...aulted sometime during the 1920s. As well, it is suggested that witchcraft and public executions were commonly practised here and that Mexican folklore demons Chaneque would poses the people. One of the Xtabay demons was named Xkeban (sinner/bad woman) while the other was named Utz-Colel (good/decent woman). Though the folklore is not what it seems and to read the story of these two women (demons) you come to realize one of the hidden truths about social condemnation. How a prostitute (Xkeban) was in-fact an angel in life while the virgin (Utz-Colel) was vengeful and spiteful. A video has been posted on YouTube claiming to have captured the image of a ghost (perhaps Juliancito) however, in downloading and examining the video I'm not lead to confirm the same. The Barlovento Restarante, in Progreso, is a great place to go get your car washed (my blue Honda) and have a shower at the same time, all while enjoying a cold beer on the sidewalk. Timing is everything.
