Every 4-H club in Canada has to do a community service activity and with the restrictions put on us this year, it was becoming difficult to find something we co...uld do together. After seeing this done elsewhere for a seniors center, we decided we could pull this off easily. We loaded up steers, heifers, a cow/calf pair, sheep and even some goats to go on parade at the Rising Sun Long Term Care Center in Black Diamond. The animals were so well behaved and the residents loved it! Each member wrote a little paragraph about themselves and their animal that was read by the staff inside while we paraded outside. All the members also gave a letter telling about themselves, their 4-H career, and their projects that will be printed off and available for the residents to read. Apparently these have to be re printed often because the residents enjoy reading them so much. A report from inside: "Destiny, our Recreation Therapist was near tears describing the joy that your visit brought. The buzz in the facility was exciting - there was a level of conversation between residents that hasn't been seen in ages. One resident who has been basically mute for months was pointing, smiling and talking about all of you. Those residents who had afternoon visitors talked about all of you and your cows, sheep, goats. Clara's beautiful "Charolais" heifer was a big hit while Finn's steer's foot placement was noted (and enjoyed) by many. The goats were a leaping success and even the falling children that were quickly scooped up by parents was something that was talked about. I guess we just don't realize how small the world has become for the residents, but you brought some normalcy to them and it really means so much." The day warmed all our hearts and we definitely have plans to come back this summer when, hopefully the residents can come outside and chat with the 4-H members and cuddle those sheep! #communityservice #seniorsmentalhealth #seniorscare #stockshowkids #4h #stockland4h UPDATE: Some fans of our post were wondering about the lack of masks. This event took place weeks ago when restrictions looked a little different from today. These are family groups that were able to stay together and being outdoors allowed us to operate as we did. Now you know how unruly these animals can sometimes be, so being pushed around a little by a 1300lb steer is certainly possible and could effect our 2m distance from time to time. We appreciate your concern. We are hoping to do the event again if/when restrictions relax so the residents & members can be outdoors together & communicate more freely. We want nothing more than to see the smiles on the 4-H members & residents faces!

Well at least it’s 2021 now

#Throwbackthursday to a picture of the experimental station in the 1930s! The experimental station started when the Boards of Trade proposed the idea, in hopes of attracting more settlers to the town - today they are one of the leading agricultural research facilities in the country!
