This was one awesome looking building in its time! The brick details were amazing even on the east face! #loveheritage

These two images are from postcards available years ago (a century ago!). Today, you would recognize the Day Block (now Lucky Palace) built in 1903 and covered in stucco in the 1970's. Notice the shallow gable over the awning! This image would be taken around 1921 or later as the Campbell Block (now Nowco Home Hardware) was built in 1920. ... The darker second postcard is from the same street angle but taken after 1915 as the building next to Lucky Palace was built that year (now Copper Lane Studio) but before Home Hardware. Both images show how stunning the Day Block was in its time with subtle changes for each business. #loveheritage

In order to understand what is used as a basis for Heritage Preservation here in the City of Lacombe, here is a link to the webpage from the city that has the documents that were created as part of the surveys done a number of years ago. The City of Lacombe is rich in heritage as can be seen in the downtown, but also has many residential properties over 50 years old. Great reading for those interested in the history of this community! https://www.lacombe.ca/242/Heritage-Preservation-Program

The Heritage Resources Committee of the City of Lacombe is excited to "show off" a project that was made possible in part by a Municipal Heritage Resources Grant. The brick facing of the St. Andrews United Church in downtown Lacombe was failing and needed major work. As this building was designated as a Municipal Heritage Resource, they were eligible to apply for monies for this restoration. It looks wonderful and is viewed best by seeing it in person! #loveheritage

A number of years ago, the local landmark being the Flatiron building was restored to it's former glory! During that time the interior was renovated to be code compliant and therefore used for commercial purposes again. During this process, it was very interesting to see how the original building was constructed. Here is a poster showing some of the interesting facts about this building #cityoflacombe #flatiron #buildingrestoration

Todays post features the Morrison residence, located at 5331 51 Avenue and built in 1919 by contractor Bert Newman. The Morrison residence is in near original condition and has maintained its original form, scale and massing. This residence acts as a key historic resource within Lacombe. This large home is symbolic of the economic growth Lacombe experienced in the Inter-war period. The home was built for prominent local resident and entrepreneur, W. Norman Morrison. The Residence is an outstanding example of Colonial Revival Architecture, and is a rare example of that style here in Lacombe.

Our post today features the Darling/Morrison Residence, located at 5323 51 Avenue, not to be mistake with the well-known Morrison Residence located next door. This residence was built around 1900 when Lacombe was incorporated into a Town. The original owner of the house was L.L. Darling. The house was sold in 1904 to W. Norman Morrison, a very prominent early resident who was Lacombe's mayor from 1917 to 1920. Morrison lived in this house until his home at 5331 51 Avenue was built. Another well-known tenant of this residence was Gordon Sweet, owner of Sweets Pharmacy. This residence features a hipped roof with a wraparound verandah with square columns and originally featured wooden siding until it was covered with stucco cladding.

Its a great conversation starter with our clients and they love being in an old building, said Anna-Maria Marten, who runs the medi-spa. A lot of times they...re laying and numbing so with the ceiling in the other room, they always look at it and talk about how pretty it is. We do have people that just come into the spa just to see the building. The Fraser-MacDonald Building and current home of Lacombe Medi-Spa and Laser Centre has now been officially designated by the City of Lacombe as a municipal historic resource: https://www.lacombeglobe.com//lacombe-designates-fraser-ma

The Puffer Residence, located on C&E Trail, was built in the early 1900s. The residence is a large two-storey building that was constructed with Victoria style influences. It is believed that the home's original owner was local businessman and community leader William Puffer. Mr. Puffer was the owner of a butcher shop in downtown Lacombe which was destroyed in a fire in 1911. Mr. Puffer partnered with Hop Chung to construct a single brick building to house both their businesses. In 1905, Mr. Puffer was elected as the first MLA for Lacombe. He served the office of MLA until 1917 and was instrumental in bringing the Federal Research Station to Lacombe.

The Calder Residence is on 50 Avenue in an area that is noted for its fine collection of heritage homes. The home was designed by architect William Shank and was built in 1914 for David Calder, who purchased the Andrew Urquhart Department Store during the same year. The Calder family was known to host Christmas dinners that were attended by community members who would otherwise have spent the holiday alone. The house features a pyramidal roof with a projecting bay window on the ground level of the front façade. The exterior cladding at one time was wood siding but has since been covered with stucco. The residence also exhibits a brick chimney and an inset front entranceway with a lather-turned column.

The Parsons Residence, located on 52 Avenue, was built in 1912 for Percy and Ida Parsons. The residence is a well maintained example of middle-class Edwardian-era housing built in Lacombe in the pre-war period. The design of the home is influenced by the Arts and Crafts style and is noteworthy for its asymmetrical massing, exposed rafter tails and full-width open verandah. It is easy to envision the Parsons family spending summer nights sipping lemonade on the beautiful verandah.
