Do you ever feel your body is working against you? Then you may need to improve your vagal tone. Of the 12 cranial nerves, the vagus innervates the deep swallow...ing muscles at the back of the throat. Most people dont know its there, but its incredibly important to get to know your vagus. The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It connects your brain to many important organs throughout the body, including the gut (intestines, stomach), heart and lungs. Vagus means wanderer in Latin, which accurately represents how the nerve wanders all over the body and reaches various organs. Of particular interest, the vagus nerve is also a key part of your parasympathetic rest and digest nervous system. It controls digestive function and heart rate, all of which can have a huge impact on your mental health. Breathing has a huge impact on the vagus nerve and is one tool to better connect to its capabilities. But what you really need to pay special attention to is the "tone" of your vagus nerve. Vagal tone is an internal biological process that represents the activity of the vagus nerve. Increasing your vagal tone activates the parasympathetic nervous system, and having higher vagal tone means that your body can relax faster after stress. If you feel you get stressed easy, you need to improve your vagal tone. One measure of vagal tone is heart rate variability (HRV). When your heart rate variability (HRV) is high, your vagal tone is also high. They are correlated with each other. How to improve your vagal tone. 1) Deep diaphragmatic breathing 2) Gargling for 60 seconds a great start to the day. 3) Cold showers 4) Low Chanting or humming. Focus on creating the deep hum from the belly and feel it vibrate up the back of your throat. Have you tried these four vagal activators? How did they make you feel?

https://www.jogc.com/article/S1701-2163(16)39620-7/pdf Abstract Objective 1. To provide an update on the use of ultrasound to evaluate amniotic fluid volume.... 2. To provide an update on amniotic fluid physiology. 3. To promote evidence based assessment techniques and definitions for amniotic fluid volume. Outcomes 1. Reduced interventions as a result of the diagnosis of oligohydramnios without increasing adverse outcomes. 2. By understanding the limitations of amniotic fluid assessment, promote more efficient use of ultrasound assessment. It is proposed that the Chamberlain classification of amniotic fluid be used to define oligohydramnios (single deepest pocket [SDP] smaller than 2 cm in depth 1 cm wide) and polyhydramnios (SDP greater than 8 cm in depth 1 cm wide) for the initial assessment of amniotic fluid during routine obstetrical scanning. (I) Recommendation 1. It is recommended that the initial, general evaluation of amniotic fluid volume during routine obstetrical ultrasound be a single pocket estimation. The Chamberlain method of amniotic fluid assessment is the preferred method for estimation. (I-A)

Breastmilk is teeming with bacteria that colonize the infants gut, and help set the course for babys growing immune system and metabolism developing resili...ence against conditions such as diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome. (See link below to read more). Breastmilk contains a particularly beneficial type of microbe, called bifidobacteria. Bifidobacteria consume special sugars found in breast milk, called human milk oligosaccharides, that babies cannot otherwise digest. As a result, these bacteria are abundant in the guts of breast-fed infants but not of formula-fed babies. Bifidobacteria help promote gut barrier function and regulate immune system response. https://www.unicef.org.uk//epigenetics-microbiome-research/ #bifidobacteria #breastfeeding #microbiome #probiotics #immunesystem #breastfeedingsupport #wildflowerbreastfeeding #ibclc #lactationconsultant #lactation #milkproduction #pregnancy #postpartum

Here are 5 things you can do to be set up for success with breastfeeding: Take a prenatal breastfeeding class. Breastfeeding might be natural, but it is not ...easy for everyone! The more you know prenatally, the better. Hang out with people who are breastfeeding. Attend a local breastfeeding support group - many are online now. Listen to their stories. Talk to them about the reality of breastfeeding - the good and the hard parts. Breastfeeding friends will be some of your best postpartum support. Find an IBCLC (lactation consultant) in your area and if possible, set up a meeting with them prenatally. You will be so glad to already know that resource is there when you need it the most!!! Discuss breastfeeding with your partner. Make a list of ways that they can support you (like soothe, bathe, and cuddle baby; provide pillows for your back; limit visitors; help with chores; etc). Any unnecessary supplementation with formula can interrupt breastfeeding and lower milk supply. Make sure you dont give baby formula unless there is a medical issue. If you do need to supplement for a time, your lactation consultant can help you get back on track with exclusively breastfeeding if thats what you choose! #breastfeeding #breastfeedingsupport #wildflowerbreastfeeding #ibclc #lactationconsultant #lactation #milkproduction #pregnancy #postpartum #breastfeedingclass #prenatal #breastfeedinggoals

How many of you have sat on a doctors exam table, when your doctor asks you to just scoot down a little for me, turn to the side for me, take a deep breat...h for me?How many of you heard something like this during labor - Okay now just give one good push for me? The ways in which we are infantilized by medical providers is subtle, and this way of talking to women is an institutionalized relic of a time, not too long ago, when medicine was overtly paternalistic. Not only does this type of rhetoric perpetuate a potentially dangerous doctor-patient dynamic in which the doctor maintains authority over your body, but what starts as asking you to do something simple for me quickly turns into a set of labs + tests being ordered that you dont think you need, or a little snip being performed without your consent during birth - that you feel obligated to do for the doctor! Medical misogyny shows up in the language that is used, the subtle coercions that happen, and the usurping of our power in sometimes small but insidious ways. What happens in a medical encounter should be for you. With your confident informed consent. When you hear this type of language, learn to recognize it so you can stay in your power and authority. You never have to do anything with your body for anyone else. You never have to agree to procedures that you do not think are best for you. You are in charge. Your body, your rules. New Study on the impact of Vitamin D and Covid 19. A randomized controlled trial. Great data. Chris Masterjohn: "The Results: Near Abolition of ICU Risk The results are absolutely stunning. 50% of the control group (13 people) required admission to the ICU. Only 2% of those in the vitamin D group (one person) required admission to the ICU." "Expressed as relative risk, vitamin D reduced the risk of ICU admission 25-fold. ... Put another way, it eliminated 96% of the risk of ICU admission. Expressed as an odds ratio, which is a less intuitive concept but is often used in statistics because it gives an estimate of the effect of the treatment that would be constant across scenarios with different levels of risk, vitamin D reduced the odds of ICU admission by 98%. Either way, vitamin D practically abolished the need for ICU admission." "This was statistically significant at p<0.001, and the 95% confidence interval was 0.002-0.17. This means that the probability of observing differences this large or greater if there is no true effect of vitamin D is less than one in a thousand, and that the probability is 95% that the true effect lies somewhere between an 83% and a 99.8% reduction int he odds of ICU admission." "No matter how you slice it, the effect of vitamin D is extremely compelling." "Our pilot study demonstrated that administration of a high dose of Calcifediol or 25-hydroxyvitamin D, a main metabolite of vitamin D endocrine system, significantly reduced the need for ICU treatment of patients requiring hospitalization due to proven COVID-19. Calcifediol seems to be able to reduce severity of the disease, but larger trials with groups properly matched will be required to show a definitive answer." https://www.sciencedirect.com//arti/pii/S0960076020302764

The development of adult microbiome health begins at birth, and through age 2, sets the potential tone for lifetime health. For example, microbiome development ...influences the development of our immune system, and when it is disrupted, we run the risk of inflammatory and allergic conditions developing sooner or later - including allergies, food intolerances, eczema, asthma, and autoimmune diseases. It can also set the tone for depression, anxiety, stress response, endometriosis, and other chronic adult challenges. So nourishing our babies microbiomes from the start is so important - and something we can all do. The biggest risk factors that can interfere with the health of the newborn microbiome are: Dysbiosis (the overgrowth of potentially harmful bacteria, yeasts, and other organisms, or lack of ample amounts of healthy microbes) Antibiotic exposure of mom in pregnancy/labor or while breastfeeding Cesarean birth Lack of breastfeeding for at least the first 4 months of life, and ideally the first year Antibiotics given to baby in the first 2 years of life What can a momma do? Naturally, whenever possible, avoid antibiotics, aim for a vaginal birth, and breastfeed. But sometimes life happens, and the best laid plans get derailed. To address this head on, you can take a probiotic during pregnancy, which can not only support babys microbiome, but can prevent UTIs, preterm labor, and other complications. I recommend taking a combination product with Lactobacilllus rhamnosus, L reuteri, L crispatus, or L salivarius. And if you have had a cesarean or needed antibiotics in labor (i..e, for GBS), give baby a probiotic for 6 months after birth. I use Klaire Therbiotic Infant (no financial relationship) in my practice, letting baby take a little off of moms finger, or diluting with some breastmilk and giving it by dropper. Have questions? Drop em in the comments and Ill circle back around! Want to learn more? Check out my article and podcast at the link below. One of the many benefits of breastfeeding beyond age 1 is the nutritional boost it can give a toddler - especially a picky one! The composition of your breastmi...lk changes to adapt to a toddlers nutritional needs. By nursing, you can help make up for any deficiencies caused by picky eating or illness. In my practice, I often see exhausted mothers with symptoms of deficiency. Pregnancy is a time of increased nutrient need to build a growing child. However for ...healthy kids, we need healthy parents and family units. Too often I see depleted parents, and the signs first show with sensitive, decaying teeth, bleeding gums, and disrupted sleep. Key nutrient deficiencies that drive these problems include: 1) Vitamin D deficiency while pregnant can affect your childs peak bone mass later in life. A Norwegian-based study reported that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in pregnant women worldwide, especially during winter months in northern climates. 2) Vitamin K2: Pregnant women undergo substantial skeletal remodelling in preparation for giving birth, and can also suffer from calcium deficiency due to the unborn childs high demand for calcium for skeletal formation. In extreme cases, this can result in pregnancy-associated osteoporosis, a condition characterized by severe pain in expectant mothers caused by vertebral fractures. 3) Iodine when youre pregnant, your bodys demand for the thyroid hormone increases, and that means you need a healthy supply of iodine. An iodine deficiency can increase the risk of miscarriage or of neurological or psychological impairments in your baby according to a 2012 article 4) A vitamin B12 deficiency can increase the risk of preterm birth according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. And a lack of B12 can also make an already tired mother-to-be feel downright exhausted. Fatigue is a major symptom. The National Institutes of Health estimates that as much as 15 percent of the general population has a B12 deficiency. 5) Zinc deficiency increases the risk of low birth weight or of infants born small for gestational age, says a 2015 study published in the journal Scientific Reports. Zinc appears to have anti-inflammatory properties that are helpful to your growing babe. Points 6 & 7 continued in comments. Did you experience dental symptoms during pregnancy? Its time to replenish yourself, and these key nutrients are a must. 6) Demand for folate, also known as vitamin B9, increases during pregnancy because this micronutrient is essential for fetal growth. Folate protects your unborn child from neural tube defects that harm the brain, spine and spinal cord and occur at early stages of pregnancy. And for expectant moms, a folate deficiency can also lead to anemia and neurological concerns. Folic acid is a common supplement that does not provide the active form of folate for the body 7) Iron: Up to 52 percent of pregnant women have iron deficiency during pregnancy that can lead to anemia. For moms-to-be, anemia can cause fatigue, difficulty sleeping and breathing complications, and it increases the risk of infection, bleeding and preeclampsia Raising kids is hard, and you dont need to be battling nutrient deficiencies on top. Have you experienced dental or other health issues after raising young children?

Did you know certain nutrients actually nourish your ovaries and uterus, support immunity, reduce inflammation, and rebalance your hormones all factors that c...an support fertility, conception, and prenatal health? Yet major studies have shown that most women in the US (and other countries) are chronically low in many of the nutrients that are essential for optimal fertility and prenatal health! While in an ideal world wed get everything we need from our diets, bumping up your nutrients via supplements can help you get ready for baby bump. Heres how a few of them support you: Methylfolate: improves egg quality and prevents miscarriage and other pregnancy complications including preclampsia and placental abruption Vitamin B6: supports healthy progesterone levels and creates a healthy uterine lining for implantation Iron: reduces ovulatory infertility Iodine: critical to healthy thyroid function and therefore healthy menstrual cycles and ovulation Choline: essential for babys neurologic development and signaling, and cognitive function, especially memory, focus, and attention Zinc: plays a role in ovulation and supports healthy estrogen and progesterone levels Omega 3 Fatty Acids: higher intake is associated with better ovarian reserve and higher rates of conception Vitamin D: plays a strong role in sex hormone production and is associated with improving fertility Probiotic: may augment fertility, conception (including with IVF), and healthy pregnancy by supporting healthy vaginal microflora But you dont have to take a zillion pills! You can get most of what you need in a prenatal vitamin, which is why women taking a prenatal vitamin are more likely to get pregnant. For more information on the optimal diet for getting and staying pregnant, in addition to recommended dosages for the above supplements, head to the link below where youll find my article and newly released podcast. Do you know why women give birth laying down on their backs? The answer is bizarre but true - in the 17th century a pervy French King insisted on watching women...s vulvas as they gave birth. So rather than on a birthing stool, which obscured his view, he insisted on a new birthing table where a woman would lie on her back, her feet in stirrups. Four hundred years later and women are still birthing in a position that research has shown slows contractions and prolongs labor. Something seem wrong with that to you? It does to me! Laboring and birthing on our backs slows labor and increases pain and the need for interventions. A study published by the NIH shows that: Freedom of movement makes labor easier. If you walk and change position in labor, you may have faster labor, experience increased comfort, be more likely to give birth vaginally, and have a better sense of control. You will have more freedom of movement if you choose a provider and birth setting that give you many options for movement and that do not routinely use medical interventions. Traditionally, this is how we labored and birthed - actively. We stand and circle our hips, lean on a wall or partner and rock from side to side, get on all fours and do figure eights. We use breath and the vibration of low pitched sound to loosen the pelvic region and encourage dilation. Then, when its time to push, our bodies intuitively get into a position that is optimal for us and our baby - often standing or squatting. Check out my FREE 30 minute video on labor + birthing movements (link below) if youre preparing to welcome your little one earthside. These are the tried and true practices Ive used with birthing mamas for over 3 decades, that reduce the need for medication, shorten labor, reduce cesarean rate & help you feel more empowered. You can use these techniques wherever you labor and birth: at home, in hospital, or a birthing center. I birthed my four babies in a squatting position - its whats felt natural for me. If you have children, what position did you birth in? How did you find the right position for you? @kokobie_love https://www.facebook.com/AvivaRomm/videos/237507657569875/

A very important post: The front of the tongue vs the middle of the tongue There is still much confusion about how to properly diagnose posterior tongue tie, ho...w to do a complete release of an anterior (and posterior) tongue tie, and what the goals of postoperative exercises are. I think this post could help providers, lactation consultants and parents understand *why* frenotomy works for improving breastfeeding. A few preliminary facts: 1) Sticking the tongue out of the babys mouth is irrelevant when it comes to breastfeeding. This was demonstrated in Donna Geddes 2008 study using ultrasound during breastfeeding. That study shows that the motion of the tongue during breastfeeding is up and down, not out. 2) The 2014 study by David Elad did the math behind the findings in the Geddes study. In this remarkable study, Elad and colleagues found that the tip of the tongue works in unison with the jaw and moves in a locked fashion up and down to keep contact with the breast. The tip of the tongue does NOT knead milk out of the breast or do anything else. He found that the mid- to posterior tongue is responsible for the generation of the vacuum. With these facts in mind, lets make some important statements 1) If the mid- to posterior tongue is the important part of the tongue during breastfeeding, and if the motion of the tongue during breastfeeding is up, then we as doctors and lactation consultants have a very important and obvious job (excuse the caps lock): IF BREASTFEEDING ISNT GOING WELL AND TONGUE TIE COULD BE THE CAUSE, THEN WE MUST CHALLENGE IF THE MID- TO POSTERIOR TONGUE MOVES UP NORMALLY OR NOT. Any other type of examination is IRRELEVANT. 2) If you dont know how to examine a baby for tongue tie, go read this and watch the video: http://www.drghaheri.com//how-to-examine-a-baby-for-tongue Specifically, proper examination of the tongue isnt peeking under the tongue with a tongue depressor and a penlight to see if an anterior tongue tie is there. You must use two fingers on either side of the frenulum to challenge the lifting of the tongue. Now, lets talk about surgery: if the surgical release of the tongue only releases the anterior part of the tongue, then you havent fully released the tie. Period. Theres no such thing as *just* an anterior tongue tie. If an anterior tongue tie is present (which restricts the front of the tongue), then the middle of the tongue is also restricted by the posterior part of that tie. If there is just a posterior tongue tie (no visible band), the tip of the tongue can move well but the middle of the tongue cant. In either case, the middle of the tongue is restricted, so the surgical goal is to release the mid-tongues restriction. Whether its an anterior tie or a posterior tie, the end surgical result should be a diamond-shaped wound under the tongue. Heres more on the difference between anterior/posterior tongue tie: http://www.drghaheri.com//rethinking-tongue-tie-anatomy-an Finally, lets talk about post-procedure stretches. Is there evidence that stretches prevent reattachment? No. Is there evidence that NOT stretching allows for normal tongue mobility? Also no. So we use our best judgement. Ill use principles of wound healing when explaining this part. 1) Nature wants to heal wounds toward the center. If theres a diamond-shaped wound from an appropriate surgical release, and its left untouched afterwards, I maintain that the diamond will contract in towards the center of the wound. That results in a pulling down effect of the mid-tongue that was properly released. This explains the statement Things were so good for a week after the surgery but then it went back to the way it was before 2) the purpose of the stretches is NOT to prevent scar tissue. You cant prevent scar tissue. The purpose of the stretch is to hack biology to get the scar to do what we want it to do. Read this for the explanation: http://www.drghaheri.com//the-importance-of-active-wound-m 3) the stretches, when done properly, draw the diamond shaped wound into a taller and taller diamond so that ultimately, the diamond collapses in from the SIDES and forms a new band (neo-frenulum). This new frenulum is no longer stuck to the muscle underneath the tongue (genioglossus muscle) and is longer and deeper than the previous tie. That allows for the new band to have slack, which will no longer pull the mid-tongue back down. 4) If a diamond-shaped wound was never seen following the release, then stretches dont matter one bit. Stretches are done to prevent reattachment - not to stretch tissue that should have been surgically released. Ive attached a couple pictures that demonstrate what the wound should start to look like as healing is progressing. I hope these points make it clear what our goals are for assessment, surgical release, and post-procedure stretches.

Breathing creates your posture. Did you know that mouth breathing is an adaption? We are not designed to breathe through the mouth in normal situations. Mouth b...reathing distorts the skeletal system. Mouth-breathing is a common clinical condition among school-age children and some studies have correlated this condition with quality of life and postural alterations. One study: Orientation and position of head posture, scapula and thoracic spine in mouth-breathing children - Looked at the orientation and position of the scapula, thoracic spine and head posture among mouth-breathing (MB) children and nasal-breathing (NB) children. They found: Mouth Breathing children increased scapular superior position in comparison to Nasal Breathing children due probably to the position of forward head, leading to an alteration in the positioning of the mandible. The absence of significantly difference in posture pattern between groups in the present study could attributed to height-weight development in this age, as the posture of children changes in order to adapt to new body proportions, regardless of health status. The results observed in this study demonstrate the importance of using reliable measurements in the postural assessment of mouthbreathing and nasal breathing children helping physical therapists to focus their strategies during rehabilitation in more specific conditions One central factor in this picture is the tongue. When you learn that the tongue is the rudder to hold the cervical spine straight, then it helps you to build straight, nasal breathing posture. When the tongue is sealed to the roof of the mouth, and this means the back part of the tongue, it seals the oral cavity, and holds the throat open like a tent. These are the muscles that support the neck, hold your posture straight, help you breathe, and maintain your posture for life. Do you suffer from neck pain or forward head posture?

Honestly this confounds me. As someone who has seen hundreds of tongue tied babies in my career - and seen the huge impact treating these issues can have on preserving breastfeeding, Im astonished at the ignorance in this group. One thing I say often to my clients, if you go to the doctor and you are limping, no doctor would say to you, oh, youre walking, who cares if you are limping! But way too commonly, my clients are told, oh your baby is gaining, who care how he is fee...ding at the breast...! Compensation is not competency. "The Australian Dental Association (ADA) is pursuing an unprecedented and unsolicited agenda to discourage dentists from treating tongue ties (ankyloglossia) in infants. Tongue tie treatment in infants can be an important intervention to prevent early cessation of breastfeeding. Early cessation of breastfeeding is linked by research meta-analysis to a variety of health risks including pneumonia, diabetes, obesity, malocclusion, reduced IQ and maternal cancers".
