Do you know the different types of birth controls and which ones to be cautious of if you're breastfeeding? There are 3 types of birth controls 1Non hormonal... (first choice), which should not decrease your milk supply. This includes Lactation Ammenorhea Menses, which many people think as long as you're breastfeeding, you're protected, but with LAM, you can't give any pacifiers, bottles or be pumping - it's strictly breastfeeding at the breast, which *may* protect you against getting pregnant. First choice also includes condoms, vasectomies, Family Planning etc 2Progestin only (2nd choice). There's some concerns that if you begin these before your milk has regulated, it may cause a dip in supply. Taking progestin only may interfere with the drop in progesterone, which helps initiate milk production. It's suggested to trial the mini pill before getting an implant/IUD to ensure that it doesn't affect your supply since you can discontinue the mini pill at any point 3Protestin + Estrogen (third choice) - this is a combination birth control, which is NOT recommended to take during breastfeeding as it will decrease milk production, like the Nuvaring. It's not recommended to take any hormonal birth controls (second choice or third choice) if you struggle with low milk supply, had a breast reduction, since you may already be at risk for low milk production, have thyroid problems, or some kinds of infertility, as this can only decrease your supply more. "Investing in breastfeeding is investing in our future." ~Alicia Tahlor, Ph. D candidate Her pilot study in New Brunswick has found that a when families receive adequate breastfeeding support in the early postpartum period, health care costs in the baby's 1st year of life are reduced considerably. I cannot wait to see the results of their expanded study which will look at long-term provincial outcomes!
