In World War II, the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion was the elite of the Canadian Army. The paras were the first to land in France the night before D-Day, pro...viding invaluable assistance during the mission. They were also enlisted to ensure that the Soviet army stopped at the agreed upon line in Germany once the Nazis began retreating. Arriving and creating a substantial roadblock just 2 hours before the Russians, the Canadian paras were able to hold the line in a 4-day armed standoff that ended with dancing and "tremendous jugs of vodka." Fight to the Finish, a #RemembranceDay Special, airs tomorrow at 9pm ET on HISTORY.

Many residents had family members deployed overseas in the Great War who came home to the horrors of the devastation of their beloved city.. Please take a moment to remember them.
