So the storm that came was hardly worth noting - a few inches of snow and a bit of wind and certainly not one for battening down the hatches, It may have been more severe on other parts of the Island. In the city the buildings protect us a bit from the blowing snow but in the country where there are open fields there can be a lot of that making driving very dicey. The wind has been fierce for a couple of days and the next storm is tomorrow, Jan 9. I like having notification of weather alerts on my cell- in the old days up north, you had to guess what the weather was going to be if you planned on going anywhere.
Second snow storm of the year on its way for Sunday. I think I will post the storm activity this winter since many of my guests ask what the weather is like at this time of year- they love our summers but . I shovelled about 2 feet of snow off the back porch where it had been blown in by the wind. I may have to hire someone to remove the accumulation off the roof of the extension at the back of the house.
A good start to the new year here. A blizzard and loads of snow. Good thing there is a brand new roof on the house which was finished on Christmas Eve by the wonderful guys at Richards Roofing. So, there are no blown off shingles lying on the ground today-there were a lot that flew off in November. Now we are warm, dry and well protected.
End of summer. Last guests have come and gone. All the glamour has been removed from the bedrooms, now pared down and ready for students to occupy for the winter. All the fussy stuff is stored in the garden room where everyone enjoyed breakfasts this summer. It was busy. Weather was hot and I had to do a lot of watering. In a freak hailstorm in August my tallest sumac tree hit the ground so now I have the whole row of them propped up to face the winter. Pictures to follow.
The walls in the summer room are bare. The wallpaper is gone.
The first guests of the season have come and gone. The Spring room is now open for visitors and the winter room will be ready in the next few days. I will not be opening the Summer and Fall rooms till June as a new sink is being installed in the bathroom on that side of the house and a vanity is going into the Summer room which is now stripped of the old wall paper and will be painted. Work but worth it.
Some winters the snow just kept falling. If the roof of the extension had too much piled up on it, we had to get someone up there to shovel it off and luckily the shrubs below survived it. Some of the trees in the back had to be removed because of dutch elm disease but others are taking their place. The garden gets more sunshine now.
The Terrace in the back yard has changed over the years. I have moved the eating area away from here closer to the house.
I have owned the property for 30 years this May. I have made a few changes.
We do have unpaid guests at the place from time to time.
All you hear is the ocean
A cosy spot that gets the morning sunshine and overlooks the garden.
