Ladysmith and Stz'uminus First Nation Council members came together on Saturday to show solidarity in our stand against racism and hate as we ensure the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women across Canada are not forgotten. Council members commemorated the women - mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, friends - of First Nations, Inuit, Métis communities by hanging red dresses within view of the Trans-Canada Highway. The REDress Project started over a decade ago ...as a public art installation by Métis artist Jaime Black in response to the more than a 1000 missing and murdered Indigenous women across our country. Communities now hang red dresses in public spaces to raise awareness and draw attention to the gendered and racialized nature of violent crimes against Aboriginal women. Red dresses were also installed by the Town in front of City Hall as well as Bob Stuart Park. We encourage our community members to learn about the REDress Project and if moved to do so, consider hanging a red dress in your windows or trees in your yard to show your support. Ladysmith Town Councillor Tricia McKay and Stz’uminus First Nation Councillor Tim Harris were among the volunteers who came out over the weekend to help Ladysmith Festival of Lights take down the remaining installations. On Saturday, members of FOL with the assistance of RKM Cranes removed the starburst on top of the Chuck Perrin Memorial Tree at the Aggie Hall, as well as the cup decoration on top of the local Tim Hortons restaurant. On Sunday morning a group of Festival ...volunteers, along with volunteers from BC Hydro and Milestones Contracting were able to take down all the rest of the decorations from the 2020 Light Up.
