What is Acid Erosion?? Sugar isnt the only culprit when it comes to tooth decay. High levels of acid in everyday foods and drinks can be just as harmful. From oranges to wine, high-acid foods and drinks can wear away your teeth, causing decay, sensitivity and discoloring. Calcium is a key ingredient in building strong teeth. Unfortunately, exposing your teeth to acid can leach calcium from your enamel, causing this protective surface to break down. ACID CAN COME FROM 3 MAI...Continue reading

The award for the most dedicated dentist must go to Brother Giovanni Batista Orsenigo from Rome, a monk who was also a dentist. He kept all the teeth he extracted over the 40 years that he was working. In 1903 the number was counted and found to be 2,000,744 teeth, an average of nearly 200 extractions per day!

Did you know??? Back in the day, you could only hope your dentist had some strong calves. Before the convenience of todays drills and power tools, dentists used drills powered by foot pedals. George Washington invented the first prototype, powering the drill by turning his mothers spinning wheel. Whether youre a dentist or a patient, neither side of this situation sounds too great, so were thankful for todays technology. mintstreetdental.au

WHAT ARE CANKER SORES? Canker sores develop inside the mouth as small white or gray sores that have a red border. They are not contagious and may occur as one sore or several. Their exact cause is uncertain but some experts believe that immune system problems, bacteria or viruses may be involved. In some cases, trauma to the mouths soft tissues can cause a canker sore. It is important to note that, many toothpastes contain an ...ingredient called SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS). SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE is a strong detergent, a surfactant and a foaming agent found in most household soaps and detergents. It has demonstrated in several studies to increase canker sore outbreaks and pain. Be sure to check your current toothpaste for SLS in the ingredient list if you have a tendency to cold sores. Canker sores usually heal on their own after one or two weeks. Over-the-counter topical anesthetics and antimicrobial mouthwashes may provide temporary relief. Salt H20 rinses are excellent for disinfecting and soothing oral lesions such as canker sores. Dissolve 1 tsp of salt in 1/2 cup of warm H20 and swish for 1 min 3-4 x daily. Stay away from hot, spicy or acidic foods that can irritate the sore. Please come in to see our dentists at Ladysmith Dental if you have a sore/lesion that lasts more than 2 weeks. Keep on smilin!!!:) Reference: ADA-mouth healthy .

We often get asked..... What is the difference between dental plaque and Tartar/Calculus? Why do I need Dental Hygiene cleanings? Plaque is a soft, sticky film that builds up on your teeth and contains millions of bacteria. The bacteria in plaque cause tooth decay and gum disease if they are not removed regularly through brushing and flossing.... Plaque that is not removed daily by brushing and flossing between teeth can eventually harden into tartar/calculus. Because tartar buildup bonds strongly to enamel, it can only be removed by your dentist or dental hygienist. As the tartar, plaque and bacteria continue to increase, the gum tissue can become red, swollen and possibly bleed when you brush your teeth. This is called gingivitis, an early stage of gum (periodontal) disease. Gingivitis is reversible with good oral hygiene and professional treatment; however, if left untreated, gingivitis can advance into Periodontitis. Periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease, occurs when bacterial infection causes your gums and the bone supporting the teeth to break down. Your gums may begin to recede, pulling back from the teeth. In the worst cases, the bone supporting the teeth is destroyed and can lead to tooth loss. Our team of registered dental hygienists are here to help you take care of your oral health. Please call to book an appointment. We look forward to taking care of your dental health care needs:) See more

Did you Know? Dentistry wasnt always an accessible field. Until the turn of the 20th century, all but a few dentists nationwide were male, and many dental schools at that time refused to admit female students. That all changed with Lucy Beaman Hobbs Taylor. She became the first woman to earn a DDS degree in 1866, more than 25 years after the first dental college opened. She opened her dental practice before earning her degree, since the Ohio College of Dental Surgery initially refused her enrollment. While Dr. Hobbs Taylor was recognized as the first woman with a DDS degree, the honor of first female dentist belongs to Emeline Roberts Jones. She taught herself basic fillings and extractions in secret, and joined her husbands Connecticut dental practice in 1855.

WHAT IS GINGIVITIS????? GINGIVITIS means inflammation of the gums. It commonly occurs because a film of plaque, or bacteria, accumulates on the teeth. Gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease, but untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. Healthy gums are firm and pale pink and fitted tightly around the teeth. Gum disease can be painless, so it is important to be aware of any of the following symptoms: -Swollen or puffy gums... -Dusky red or dark red gums -Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss -Bad breath -Receding gums -Tender gums How Can I Prevent Gingivitis? Practicing consistent oral hygiene and attending regular, professional cleanings with your dentist are essential to preventing gingivitis. Gingivitis is common, and anyone can develop it. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene. Good oral health habits, such as brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and visiting your dentist every four to six months for regular examinations and professional cleanings can help prevent and reverse gingivitis. Dental restorations that dont fit properly or crooked teeth that are difficult to clean, conditions that decrease immunity such as leukemia, HIV/AIDS or cancer treatment. and certain drugs for epileptic seizures, some calcium channel blockers also influence your susceptibility to gingivitis.Other variables include hormonal changes, genetics and medical conditions such as certain viral and fungal infections. Because tobacco use increases the risk of gum disease (and other health issues), stop using tobacco products. The most important factor to help prevent gingivitis is to live a healthy lifestyle and have healthy oral care habits. This includes daily brushing and flossing and regular visits to your dentist for open conversations about your oral health. Untreated gingivitis can progress to gum disease that spreads to underlying tissue and bone (periodontitis), a much more serious condition that can lead to tooth loss. The sooner you seek care, the better your chances of reversing damage from gingivitis and preventing its progression to periodontitis. Schedule an appointment with our Ladysmith Dental Team for your checkup and cleaning so that we can evalulate your gums and determine the treatment that is best for optimum gum health. :) https://www.mayoclinic.org//g/symptoms-causes/syc-20354453 https://www.colgate.com//what-is-gingivitis-signs-and-symp

Did you know??? That you should spit but avoid rinsing your mouth with water after brushing? Rinsing our mouth with water washes away the protective fluoride left behind by brushing. "Fluoride is the single-most important ingredient in toothpaste. It helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to tooth decay. Fluoride also reduces the amount of acid that the bacteria on your teeth produce"... By spitting toothpaste out then not rinsing with water it ensures that the fluoride found in the majority of toothpastes will remain on the teeth and continue to be effective. If you do like to use mouthwash, try to use it at a separate time to brushing to ensure that you get the full benefit of the fluoride in your toothpaste. Dr Nigel Carter OBE, CEO of Oral Health Foundation.
