True! Part of conservation is letting the females live to produce more. In the past, the tally man had to close moose hunting for 4 years sometimes just so that his children and grand children would have plenty. This is yet another great way to think about our future here at Waposite.

Remember, if your fishing out in the lake and making fire, please make sure you put out the fire completely. Also if your smoking while driving, please do not throw your cigarette out because this can still potentially cause fire, even if your out near the shore of the lake or having lunch, avoid throwing your cigarette on dry ground. All these safety measures are simple and we always want to preserve our land in every way possible especially during these hot summers. Let ou...r future generation enjoy our land by protecting it :) Enjoy the fishing and family time

Geese are migratory and come and go every year. Families are welcome to hunt during the spring. However there is a fine line between respecting the tallyman's hunting ground. There are unwritten laws of mutual respect that have been passed down throughout the years from generation to generation. The tallyman sacrificed many years of preserving the wildlife in his hunting ground where he had to close moose hunting for many years. Sometimes he would not hunt moose for 5 years ...just so they would multiply. Many years ago Waposite suffered a devastation of forest fires that destroyed most of its boreal forest that was rich in moose, bear and other animals. This is why this decision was taken just so that his children and his other family members could enjoy the future of hunting and trapping. Today we can be proud of the tallyman's sacrifice for us but we still have to maintain and manage our wildlife while respecting all the animals that live there. We still maintain this strategy by avoiding the winter hunts so that the females can give birth and their numbers will rise. Although we do hunt during the winter, it is not every year. We are not the only predators, there are natural predators such as the wolf and the bear that hunt as well. The moose is highly valued because they're only starting to multiply. Please understand and respect that a tallyman has rules that need to be respected, this is the same for every hunting ground. If your from outside of the family or visiting, you need to ask permission before you want to head out to hunt moose especially during the winter. The tallyman understands that fall time you need to provide for your family and if you see a moose, then by all means harvest it because it is your blessing. People had already tress passed in our hunting ground in the past without asking permission and this is not good because they have not respected the tallyman by asking first before hunting. If you're from outside of the family and want to take a visitor during the fall, please ask permission first before doing so. Fishing is fine and all are welcome. It's all about respect and preserving the land together as family. Thank you for your understanding :)
