Lake Cowichan Fire Department 16.05.2021

We have had a beautiful week of nice weather but with the all of the full sunny and windy says comes notice that in our Fire Protection Area we are currently in the HIGH rating for Forest Fire Danger. Please be very careful when have any type of campfire as well as when you are using quads etc. out in the bush. It is very dry out there for this time of year. Please be safe and call #5555 on your cell phone or 1-800-663-5555 or 911 to report a wildfire.

There will be donation boxes for toys outside the entrance to Lake Cowichan Country Grocer this weekend on Friday December 4th from 5 PM to 8 PM and Saturday December 5th from 10 AM to 4 PM. The bins will be monitored and taken away when they are full. There will also be a donation box for those wishing to drop off money.... Our Firefighters in their gear and our trucks with the flashing lights will not be present this year , no hot chocolate or hot dogs this year. But we hope that you will still drop off your new unwrapped toy this weekend so we can help Community Services help families at this time of year. For those who wish to donate money we have also set up an account that you can send an etransfer to at Island Savings. Just send an interac etransfer to [email protected] . All money sent will go towards this year’s fundraising efforts. We can also do a contactless toy drop off at the fire hall. Call 250-749-3522 leave your name and phone number and we can arrange a time for you to drop off your donation at the front door and we will collect it after you leave. Country Grocer also has set up a donation at the till program. When you go through the till just let them know how much you wish to donate and to which agency Lake Cowichan Community Services or Lake Cowichan Food Bank and they will collect it on their behalf and forward the monies to them later. There is also a food bin year round inside of Country Grocer for donations to the Food Bank. Please remember to keep 6 feet or 2 meters apart when dropping toys off in the donation bins, use hand sanitizer, wash your hands often and wear your mask. There is a hand washing station outside at Country Grocer and the donation area will be sanitized regularly. Apologies for all of the back and forth on & off again but we are just trying to make sure everyone is safe as well as making sure we do our best to support families in need at this time of year in the Lake Cowichan area. We thank you for your continued support and wish you a Merry Christmas

UPDATE 2 UPDATE UPDATE 2 We have been informed by Vancouver Island Health that the Province has reconsidered and has now deemed Toy/ Food Drives an event which currently will not allow us to hold our event this weekend Dec 4th & 5 at Country Grocer in Lake Cowichan. The current restrictions are until Dec 7th so hopefully things will change and we can hold it the following weekend or if they really change we can hold it this coming weekend.... We have a COVID-19 Safety Plan to hold a Drive Thru Toy/Donation drop off at the Fire Hall but need to wait until the Province either changes, updates or rescinds the current restrictions. We are in touch with Vancouver Island Health and will notify you of the revised plan once we get more information. *****We currently are able to accept donations of new unwrapped toys or gift cards for Community Services at the Fire Hall. Call 250-749-3522 leave a message with your name & number we will call you back to arrange a time to do a contactless drop of your item to the Fire Hall or send us a message on Facebook Messenger with that same information******* We have been in contact with Country Grocer and are working together to come up with a solution to get the help you want to give to the people that need it. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Stay tuned for further updates

Everyone is encouraged to stay home this Remembrance Day, observing two minutes of silence at 11 o'clock. With pandemic restrictions in place, only those veter...ans selected and invited by the Legion are to attend ceremonies at local cenotaphs. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 134 will be live streaming their ceremony here: https://www.facebook.com/Royal-Canadian-Legion-Br-134-247006932368146/ Wherever you are today, take those few short moments at the eleventh hour to quietly recognize those who have left their doorsteps never to return, and acknowledge those who did return, many of whom left a part of themselves, visible or otherwise, in a foreign land. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.

Fire Prevention Week is this week October 4-10. This year’s campaign, Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen" works to educate everyone about the simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe in the kitchen. Thanksgiving is coming up this weekend and lots of time will be spent in the kitchen preparing and cooking for your family. Please read the attached safety tip sheets so you can have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving with your family.... The Lake Cowichan Fire Department has sent Fire Prevention information packages to both schools and hopefully your children will be bringing home a Home Fire Escape Plan for your family to work on and practice. If you want more information on how to make a Home Fire Escape Plan as well as a copy of the escape plan grid you can download it here; https://www.nfpa.org//Staying/Preparedness/Escape-planning
