"Meanwhile, Lakecrest Independent School had already moved to do online learning Wednesday for all students for the rest of this week, but after the latest spike was revealed, the private school has extended that to Feb. 26." Thanks to the Telegram for covering our quick move to remote learning. We are prepared to offer remote learning to all our students as long as it takes to ensure the health and safety of the Lakecrest community. https://www.thetelegram.com//online-again-st-johns-area-s/
K-6 Students will be dismissed at noon today to accommodate parent-teacher interviews this afternoon.
Students and staff at Lakecrest had a great start to remote learning today as teaching and learning picked right up where we left off. We are ready to continue with remote learning for as long as it takes to help ensure the health and safety of our school community members.
During remote learning, Hasan Hai, community builder and diversity and inclusion speaker, joined Lakecrest students to share experiences about racism in Newfoundland. We are learning so much!
The Grade six class is learning about cultural intelligence in Newfoundland by first learning about refugees and immigration. Here the Association for New Canadians taught us about human migration.
There will be a virtual Star Student assembly today at 1:00. Please see Mr. Boekhoud's Monday newsletter for login details.
Lakecrest will shift to remote learning for K-9 students for the remainder of this week. Lakecrest community members are asked to please check their email for further information.
Lakecrest will be closed today due to the Notice from Public Health which was released late last night. As our school has Grades which fall within the range being closed by NLESD, we will be closing for the full day today (Tuesday, February 9, 2021) and will release further information after conferring with our Medical Task Force and Public Health about the best way to move forward.
Our very own Dr. Zaina Albalawi will be a guest on CBC's Cross Talk with Ramona Dearing today to discuss and answer listener questions about diabetes. We hope you consider tuning in. She’s currently a member of the Atlantic Collaborative Working group on diabetic foot prevention t...o develop policy and healthcare recommendations to reduce amputations in the region. Dr. Albalawi is also a member of the Lakecrest Medical Task Force -- the team that put together recommendations for the safe re-opening of our school this past September. Today we're sending a special thank you to our design and advertising vendor Dc Design House (AgentDc) for the outstanding work they've done for us since early 2019. Here's a small sample. From refreshing our logo and brand to helping our successful recruitment efforts, Don-e Coady and his team have understood the Lakecrest community and designed memorable ways to tell our story. They also worked throughout the pandemic on a number of projects that have positioned our marketi...ng efforts to thrive in the years ahead. Thank you Dc Design House for your commitment to supporting community-minded organizations and for delivering measurable results for us at Lakecrest! You can learn more about their work at: http://dcdesignhouse.ca/
Throughout last Thursday and Friday, Artisan Concrete (run by one of our amazing Lakecrest families) installed a new walkway to Door 3 to better serve our students when the snow starts. During the winter months, we will cease to use Door 1 (the left-hand door) as the hill will become a safety hazard with regular use during the ice & snow. Families will be redistributed to Doors 2 (front door) and 3 (right-hand door) as we'll still be able to maintain physical distancing and spread out the arrival/departure of students to keep things safe. You can visit the Artisan Concrete website to learn more about this local company: https://artisanconcrete.ca/
Today is World Mental Health Day. Make sure you take the time to look after yourself, and others. https://www.unicef.org//four-things-you-can-do-support-you

As one of the many facility upgrades taking place this year, we've installed touch-less faucets, water fountains and water bottle filling stations throughout the school. This will limit contact with surfaces to better keep our staff and students safe. Water bottle filling stations/water fountains will continue to be filtered to provide the cleanest possible water. Students are encouraged to continue bringing a water bottle from home, and refill it at one of our stations as needed throughout the day. We'd like to say a huge THANK-YOU to the Home & School Association for their contribution in helping us complete these upgrades!
Congratulations to Lakecrest alumnus Dr. Liam Morrissey who just defended his PhD!
