The Marathon of Hope
1.) July 28, 1958 Terrance Stanley Fox is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. March 9, 1977 Terry discovers he has a malignant tumour in his right leg; the leg is amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee. The night before his amputation he reads about an amputee runner and dreams of running. February 1979 Terry begins training for his Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research and awareness. During his training he runs over 5,000 kilome...tres (3,107 miles). October 15, 1979 Terry writes to the Canadian Cancer Society to support his run: I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to. April 12, 1980 St John’s, Newfoundland: Terry dips his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean and begins his odyssey. He runs an average of 42 kilometres a day (26 miles) through six provinces. May 15, 1980 Terry takes part in a 5 km Run with the students of Duncan MacMillan High School, Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia. A chance meeting with one grade 10 student influenced her life of leadership in support of the Terry Fox Run for 30+ years. That young lady is MaryAnne Beaver Bailey

5.) With Terry in the lead students climbed the hill to their high school. May 15, 1980 toward the end of their 5 km Run. Halifax County Councillor & Warden Art MacKenzie and School Principal, Orville Mombourquette keep up with Terry`s pace.
6.) Students at Duncan MacMillan High School were in awe of this young man who would run so far for cancer research. Note the young lady in blue behind Terry. This is grade 10 student MaryAnne Beaver. We now know her as MasyAnne Bailey. MaryAnne lost her dad, after a short illness to cancer in June 1979. MaryAnne talked to Terry at length, got his autograph (and a kiss). From that day onward, MaryAnne created a scrapbook of news articles about Terry. That has lead to her leadership role in organizing many Terry Fox Runs in her communities.
7.) Halifax County Councillor & Warden Art MacKenzie welcomed Terry to Sheet Harbour.
8.) Orville Mombourquette, principal and students meet with Terry following the 5 km Run.
Following the 5 km Run the students at Duncan MacMillan held an assembly for Terry. Following the reception Terry wrote: `When I ran with the kids I really burned it just to show them how fast I could go. They were tired and puffing. All right!``
