Dr. Shoeb Mohammad, Assistant Professor of Strategic Management at Lakehead University's Faculty of Business Administration, presented at the Brown Bag Research Presentation on February 28th, 2020. Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the discussions. Title: The Effect of Skilled Labour Scarcity on Law-abiding Organizational Climates in Emerging Markets: The Moderating Role of Managerial Ties in Mexico... Abstract: Scarcity of skilled labour in the emerging market context is considered a severe challenge facing organizations since it limits the quality and depth of their labour force. Despite the prevalence of the issue, the relationship between skilled labour scarcity at the organizational-level and unlawful organizational conduct, a problematic behaviour that plagues emerging markets, has not been examined. In this paper, we investigate this relationship, hypothesizing that skilled labour scarcity negatively affects law-abiding organizational climate, a measure of an organization's adherence to the rule of law, by reducing an organization's ability to adapt to its environment. Furthermore, we explain the impact that managerial ties have on this relationship, hypothesizing how ties with industry firms and ties with government differently impact the relationship between skilled labour scarcity and law-abiding climate. Hypotheses were tested with survey data collected from 144 Mexican companies.

Claudio Pousa, Associate Professor of Marketing at Lakehead University's Faculty of Business Administration, presented at the first Brown Bag Research Presentation of the year on January 31st, 2020. Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the discussions. Title: Unleashing the Power of Implementation Intentions through Coaching Abstract: Goal-setting theory (Locke and Latham, 1990) establishes that, when people are committed to difficult goals, they exert more... effort on goal-related tasks, persist longer in the face of adversity and direct their actions by selecting task-relevant knowledge and strategies that allow them to achieve the goals. Sometimes, however, the automated mechanisms are not always sufficient to solve problematic situations with customers and achieve the goals. The complexity of today’s markets and interactions with savvy customers call salespeople to engage in deliberate planning to develop new knowledge in the form of new task-related strategies in order to tackle the new challenges. The development of new task-related strategies presents an alternative way to providing more effort, especially suited for complex tasks, like the ones a salesperson can find in today’s markets. Sales managers can greatly help salespeople develop new task-related strategies if they incorporate it in their coaching sessions. During the coaching session, the manager helps the salesperson diagnose problematic situations, find the right solutions, and commit to specific actions that he can implement in future interactions with the customers. After the coaching session, the salesperson knows what he needs to do when the problematic situation arrives, and he is more prepared to implement these new task-related strategies when the situation arrives. He has developed what is known as implementation intentions (Gollwitzer, 1999).

The Faculty of Business' Dr. Farshid Shams presented his Brown Bag Research topic: Coping with academic capitalism in Canadian universities: Reconstructing contradictory institutional logics through identity work, as our last Brown Bag of 2019. Academic capitalism refers to an ideological reform in the higher education sector which has brought about a culture of audit and surveillance that gives precedence to corporate values and thus undermines traditional principles of acad...emic work. To better understand the dynamics of resolution between these co-existing yet contradictory logics, Dr. Shams studied the everyday practices of academics in ten Canadian universities. Four mitigation strategies of delegitimisation, defining/elaborating, selective identification and appropriation of realised publicness are identified. A subject that will have further research and investigation, we look forward to hearing more about this from Dr. Shams.

As 2019 comes to a close, and we prepare for 2020, we reflect on the year we've had. Firstly, we would like to again congratulate all of our 2019 graduates and wish you success in your chosen careers. Again we also congratulate Dr. Dadgostar on his newest adventure. After 24 years as our Dean and CEO (Chief Education Officer ) he has now moved on to spending time with life's most precious gifts, his grandchildren.... With our changing of the guard, Dr. Richards, our new Dean, has been doing an excellent job of heading our Faculty, and in my opinion, is one of the best bosses I've ever had. We have said goodbye to some of our colleagues as they have moved on to other institutions, and have welcomed others who have joined us. Please make sure to say "hi" to Dr.s Kabir, Mohammad, and Zhang next time you visit. We hope that everyone had an amazing break, and we look forward to seeing our returning and new students next week when the winter term starts. Wishing you a Happy and Prosperous New Year, Sincerely, the Faculty and Staff of the Faculty of Business

It was an eventful day for the Faculty of Business' MBA students December 2, 2019. We welcomed a variety of guest speakers to engage our Project Management students on different ideas with respect to the subject. Ms. Emily Shandruk, Director of Events & Community Involvement, Destination and Member Relations Coordinator, Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, has also been teaching the MBA students this past Fall 2019, discussed Planning for the unexpected, a topic which grabbed ev...eryone's attention. Our second speaker, Mr. Youlian Peng, Founder of Peng You Taiji Quan Association and Councillor, City of Thunder Bay, discussed Tai-chi Perspective, Culture and Approach in Project Communications. A riveting topic, Mr. Peng has been very passionate to advocate Tai-chi culture and philosophy at both local communities and international events. To name a few, the International Wushu Federation has awarded the 2024 World Taijiquan (Tai Chi) Championships to the City of Thunder Bay, and the city will also host next year's International Wushu Festival and National Championships at the Lakehead University. He shared his personal experiences in the city election and the initiatives and planning of those events. He applied Taiji philosophy and approach to leverage various resources and to enhance the communications and collaborations in succeeding those projects and events. Mr. Jeff Palmer, Community Planner, Urban Systems Ltd. and Director, Canadian Institute of Planners, gave our students some insights into the Victoriaville Centre Options, and some ideas that the City of Thunder Bay has and what their plans are for the shopping centre. We would like to thank each of our speakers for taking time out of their busy schedules to speak with our students, and look forward to future collaborations with these, and other speakers to come.
