"Since lockdown, gardening has turned into a survival impulse. All over the world, seed suppliers are running out of stock when it comes to panic-buying, carrot and courgette seeds are the new toilet roll. Even live chicken sales have spiked. The Good Life is back in fashion."

Too bad it takes a pandemic to reveal that which is essential! Hopefully those hungering before this crisis will be at the forefront of the food recovery!

We knew this all along - but happy it is official. Community and allotment gardens deemed essential by Province on Ontario this morning! Now we await updates from local health authorities and proper safety protocols!

If only we had a local school to help train and support farmers of the future! Another reason why Lakehead needs a Recreation, Research and Education Farm (RREF)! Speaking of which, now is a good time for the administration to hear from you and your desire to seed a farm on campus - [email protected] especially now as they refine the vision for our official Strategic Plan!

It is now clear that the risks of pandemics, on top of climate change and economic and political instability to the sustainability of our communities are too great. Time to invest in that which matters most - that which is essential to health and life!

How about a Recreation, Research and Education Farm at Lakehead to secure our food system and create long term economic, ecological stability and healthy communities?

We need more people sourcing their food sustainably from the land near them rather than grocery stores (no offence to grocery store employees, ya'll rock!!).

Lakehead has a major role to play in regenerative agricultural research and education. Beyond carbon neutral we must come together to restore carbon to our soils and farms. "The group points to soil tilling, chemical products, fossil fuel usage and low biodiversity on farms as key areas that must be improved upon."

Tuesday Table Team! We are looking for folks willing to sit and table on Tuesdays. So far we have ten to eleven-thirty and one-thirty to four! Anyone for eleven-thirty to one-thirty? We'll start this up in a couple weeks with LUSU after we have a good schedule set in place (or even without one, haha)!
