Lakeland College has learned that an employee at the Lloydminster campus tested positive for COVID-19. The individual followed our protocol and stayed home when feeling ill. Because of this, Public Health staff believe the risk of transmission is low. The individual is self-isolating and we wish them a safe and speedy recovery. To respect confidentiality, no other details will be released. Public Health staff are contacting those who may have been in close contact with the p...erson. There are no other confirmed cases in our campus community. Our Lloydminster campus remains open to employees and students. There are no changes to our program and service delivery. Our campuses remain closed to the public, including family of students and staff. Please continue to follow the COVID-19 guidelines provided by your health region and the college protocol available at www.lakelandcollege.ca/covid19. This case reinforces the importance of all of us following the guidelines to keep Lakeland safe.

In preparation for the WHT Mead Animal Science Centre renovation, our Landscape and Horticulture Sustainability (LHS) department relocated a Pinus flexilis (Limber Pine), an endangered species in Alberta. They’ll continue to take inventory of the surrounding landscape and catalogue what is there to ensure any high-value species can be protected and/or relocated. Afterward, the remainder of the landscape will be removed to accommodate the renovation. However, by capturing inf...ormation about what is currently available, we can ensure that it is equitably replaced in the new landscape or compensated in other areas on campus. LHS will observe a two for one ratio; two trees planted for every tree removed. This ensures we not only preserve existing canopy coverage ratios on campus; we can slowly increase the coverage ratio over time. On Oct. 4 and 5, 12 environmental sciences students and two instructors relocated numerous plants from the native garden to the Quad to support LHS’ efforts. The aim is to create a new garden in the Quad. The native garden was built by students 10 years ago. Students picked the species and continually added to the garden yearly for educational purposes and plant collections.
