Last week we caught up with Maureen and Allan Weeks to accept their generous donation of $500 for #cancercare at @LakeridgeHealth! Maureen made and sold baked goods for her church members, friends, family, and neighbours to raise these proceeds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October! Maureen knows first-hand how important local cancer care services are after receiving treatment herself at the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre. Melanie Basque is an incredible mental health advocate in our community. She created a 30-day Sober and Self-Love challenge that fundraised over $1,500 throughout October in honour of her mom, Cathy, who passed away in June 2019 from addiction. All proceeds from Melanie's fundraiser were donated to support Pinewood Centres for Addiction and Mental Health at @LakeridgeHealth as a way of saying 'thank you' to the kind staff and services Cathy relied on during her battle with mental illness. Last week #HockeyforHealthHeroes winner Brad F had the chance to connect with NHL player and Whitby native James Neal. Going the (social) distance for a good cause, James also had a one-of-a-kind video call with Brad’s son Luke who is currently at Dalhousie University. Being able to meet and talk to James about playing in the NHL was a thrill. Hockey's been a big part of my life since I was a boy, so sitting down (socially spaced!) with someone as talented and experienced as... James was unforgettable. He's an outstanding player, but he's also equally concerned about giving back to his home community. The experience was exciting for hockey fan Luke too, It was great to meet James on FaceTime. He’s a really cool guy who definitely gave me some more confidence to make it big some way or another in this world. We also want to thank Paul Mackie Sr., loyal Foundation donor and volunteer for connecting us with James and bringing this special moment to life in support of Lakeridge Health's #Whitby and #Oshawa Hospitals.
