We have said this before, and we are saying it again. Because there is a MARKED INCREASE IN DOG THEFT since COVID started, and the trend continues upwards. Dogs... have always held high value for us as owners, but their current "market value" as a "profitable item" has gone through the roof! A lot of people have been looking to get a companion dog this year, more so than ever, and the high demand dictates the ridiculous current high prices. This high demand has also caused a higher number of dog theft. Some are stolen in broad daylight, sometimes right off their properties. If they are young, they are either kept to breed, or sold at high price. We have also seen dogs offered for rehoming, and then resold at a higher price. There is also the matter of lost dogs who are found, and either kept or sold; we saw a recent case where a dog was lost, found, then put up for sale on Kijiji for $600. Found dogs that are kept fulfill an emotional need for these finders, but deprives the dogs of their own family, and causes these families great distress. It is unfair and selfish, and all efforts to reunite them should be undertaken. We live in a very different world right now folks. PLEASE BE EXTRA VIGILANT WITH YOUR DOGS, AND ESPECIALLY ONLINE! THIEVES ARE ONLINE TOO. 1- NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG UNATTENDED, even in your yard, always keep an eye on them; rural areas are particularly targeted so be vigilant & don’t let your dog roam off property 2- Never give your address publicly online, keep it private 3- Best not to tie your dog out front in full view of passing opportunists 4- If you’re able to, invest in a security system, some are very affordable, they are invaluable tool especially rural areas prone to theft in general 5- Form a neighbourhood watch in your area, so everyone has each other’s back 6- If you see suspicious activity, report it immediately to Police 7 - Put a GPS tag on your dog if you can afford it 8- DO NOT GIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION ONLINE EVER! 9- Always keep your dog on leash during outings, always 10- If your dog goes missing, do post online for awareness, but remember that large neon posters, and flyers distributed door to door locally are still your best bet for recovering them quickly. Thieves rarely work alone, and don’t always drive a white van. They watch online activity, and so should you. Be aware. Be vigilant. Look out for pets in your area. Spaying or neutering your dog also helps to decrease its market value, remember that. Thank you for keeping your pets safe, and sharing this post.
