Happiest of Holidays and all things celebratory from the team at the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre! In celebration, we’ll be taking time away from screens from December 23 to January 4th, to the delight of our four-legged assistants (pictured above). We wish you all a safe and happy break, and look forward to 2021! ... #LakeshoreGrounds Image Text: four pictures of the most adorable supporters of the Interpretive Centre. Kayda, Jennifer’s rescue rabbit, reluctantly poses with cartoon presents, and a cartoon Santa Hat. We couldn’t convince her to wear a real one... Koda, Nadine’s sassy dog, who also refuses to wear real elf hats, has a cartoon hat, and a cartoon wreath over his smug little face. They’re cute, and do they know it!

Today we remember all those who served. At the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery, 24 WWI veterans were recognized with headstones last week thanks to research and funding by the Last Post Fund - Fonds du Souvenir. On the weekend, volunteers from Among Friends and the local community gathered (while socially distanced) to mark each of the veterans’ graves with flags and flowers.

One hour off each day; namely, fifty minutes for dinner, forty-five minutes for rest is our only break each day. Over the history of the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital, nurses worked long hours for low pay. Strikes were held in the 1930s and 1970s as they fought for equal pay with nurses in general hospitals. (For those reading closely - as one of our Followers on Instagram was - yes, there is a typo in that quote. In 1935, the nurse was misquoted in the paper: it should re...ad "One hour off each day; namely FIFTEEN minutes for dinner, forty-five minutes for rest is our only break each day." It's an 85-year-old typo!) Quote from The Globe, 25 May 1935 #HumberMentalHealth #TheStoryUnfolds

You should see our sea of cabbages! The Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital operated two separate farms during its history - one immediately to the west of the cottage buildings and one north of the main site (near where the Cemetery is today). Patients worked alongside paid staff to raise animals (chickens, ducks, cattle, and horses) as well as a wide variety of crops (legumes, vegetables, and fruits). The goal was for the institution to be as self-sufficient as possible in producing its own food. Quote from The Third Garden installation at the Assembly Hall. #HumberMentalHealth #TheStoryUnfolds
