Yesterday some families came just before the pickup time to help moving the mulch that one of the school's neighbors donated. Our gardens are almost ready for the winter. UNIQUE FEATURES OF LAKESIDE SCHOOL NUMBER 2 A common concern of parents, in general, is if their child is fulfilling the curriculum demands. Here at Lakeside School, we strive to have all the BC curriculum delivered to our students in a respectful and artistic manner. On top of that, we also offer handwork and language classes customized for each developmental stage. In yesterday´s post, we described our external spaces which are constantly used for physical activities. The d...iversity of plants and insects found on our grounds allows the children to discover different aspects of life and even deal with emotional variations in contact with nature. Additionally, every week they leave school with their teachers for a nature walk, which is highly anticipated. They also enjoy the cooperative games their teachers present and invite them to play, which is a great way to develop a sense of group and community. Constructed based on anthroposophical principles, the different angles and shapes were made to imitate nature in its variety of shapes beyond squared angles. The gardens and yards bursting of life and colour in spring and summer, are also well used during fall and winter. UNIQUE FEATURES OF LAKESIDE SCHOOL NUMBER 7 Several stories the children from Grades 1-8 in Lakeside School listen to or read are, at the end of the class or of the season, interpreted by them. Sometimes only to themselves, and at other special times to the whole school, including their families. Each play is different and the teacher carefully presents the story, allowing the children to experience different roles until she decides who is going to play each of the character...s. This work, moulded according to the needs and abilities of each age range, allows the children to develop important skills in life: creativity by choosing their characters and developing their own ways to speak and act, confidence in their capabilities and their voices, and teamwork by deciding every detail of the play together. UNIQUE FEATURES OF LAKESIDE SCHOOL NUMBER 6 While in Preschool and Kindergarten, children experience foreign languages through music and plays, from Grade 1 on they start to have more time dedicated to the learning of French and German. In the earlier grades, all language teaching is done through storytelling and games to learn intuitively and repetitively the sounds of a new idiom. Later they start to read and write, learning the grammatical rules.... The choice of language is based on the different movements of the phonetic apparatus and also on the structure of the language, so children can develop other parts of their brains and muscles used when speaking the different sounds. Mostly it is about understanding the development of the human race; the history, geography and culture lived by our ancestors who shaped our present days. Children retell the plots in different ways so they can memorize and transform the learning in action.... Another method used in Lakeside School is the daily verse. Each grade’s daily routine starts with the recitation of the Morning Verse to inspire strength, reverence, and willingness to learn and work. Similarly, at the end of the school day, another verse is recited to send children home with purpose, peace and trust based on all good, beauty and truth in the world. UNIQUE FEATURES OF LAKESIDE SCHOOL NUMBER 4 A story well told can transform emotions, attitudes and thoughts. Let´s be honest: it is much more interesting to listen to an amazing story that shows you how to add or subtract, and that story leads to a game, and that game to a drawing, and the drawing to the understanding of concepts, than having a teacher fill a blackboard with numbers and symbols that still don’t make sense to you. ... Therefore, storytelling and the illustration of the story are effective methods used in almost all classes at our school.
