Today would have been 4H achievement day show and sale, but, alas, this is not an ordinary year! Joscelyn would like to thank Dean and Sheilah Swanberg for pur...chasing her steer and helping her conclude 7 months of hard work. She is thrilled that some of the meat is being donated to Odyssey House and will help women and children in need. This 4H year has not been what we expected but great things are still happening! My kids are marketing their 4H steers. Here's a persuasive essay to tell you all about it! Why 2020 is the best year to buy a 4H steer by Bronwyn, Jack, an...d Joscelyn McGrail 2020 will go down in history as the year of Covid-19. It is the reason we stayed home for months to help flatten the curve. Public events and gatherings are on a moratorium until the pandemic has passed. All the while, diligent 4H members all around Alberta have continued to raise their market beef projects, even though our shows and public auction sales cannot carry on as in years past. This need not be a deterrent, however, as 4H kids are finding creative new ways to market their beef. This could be the best year for you to buy a 4H steer for 3 reasons: great food in a time of uncertainty, advertising and community goodwill, as well as the chance to support young agriculture entrepreneurs. There have been questions about the availability of meat in supermarkets due to the temporary closures of some major meat packing plants. However, there is no shortage of beef on the local farms. This spring, 4H clubs are offering excellent, finished steers fed on premium rations for sale by private treaty. This means you don’t have to attend an auction and bid: you can make an offer and your steer will be delivered to the local butcher of your choice. You can also give instructions to the butcher for how you want your meat cut and wrapped. It will be a relief to you to have a freezer full of choice cuts in these uncertain times, knowing that you can feed your family for the following year. Many individuals who purchase 4H beef do so in the name of their business because it is great advertising. The publicity on social media seems to be even higher this year than usual, with a greater number of posts occurring in lieu of show and sale printed programs. 4H clubs greatly appreciate and make note of the support we receive from buyers, and community good will is generated when you purchase a 4H steer. This year, with a private sale, you could even have the option of purchasing half a steer and two individuals or businesses can receive the publicity benefits. 4H has been teaching kids to Learn to Do by Doing for over 100 years. Some benefits to us have been the hard work that leads to a solid work ethic, the chance to learn hands on about raising and caring for animals the best possible ways, and opportunities like this to try marketing our animals in ways we haven’t pursued until now. This is your opportunity to help ensure that small farms and local businesses can continue into the future. 4H beef buyers are partners with today’s youth in the future of local agri-business. Don’t let 2020 be the year that your barbecue sizzle is silenced. Take action and fill your freezer now! This is the best time to purchase a 4H steer. Contact us to make a deal today!
