AHHHhhh, the perfect day for our ELF gym, toffee and laundry. GTL Our Elf is usually very active during her summer vacation but she finds it hard to fit it daily movement over the holidays. Increased work load, stress, decreased daylight hours and snow/ice give her less opportunities and less desire to move. This year she has cut out 15 minutes every afternoon for herself. On warm days she walks, on cold days she stretches and on very busy day she lays down and listens to a... breathing meditation on her phone. These 15 minutes she had scheduled in her day make her feel less stiff and more relaxed. One day she will get back to her gym program but for December this works for her. After her 15 minutes of movement (or rest) she grabs a snack. She’s given up her afternoon coffee and replaced it with something more filling. Some people like nuts, hard boiled egg, glass of water or an apple but our ELF likes toffee. After this little afternoon break our Elf gets back to work and at Lakeview Physiotherapy that means LAUNDRY. Our Elf asked Michelle Ng, one of Lakeview’s fabulous MSK Physiotherapists, what a shoulder does. Michelle just shrugged. In addition to shrugging, shoulders are important for everything!! The Elf was reading about pain and was surprised to learn that pain is in your head so our Elf climbed inside this head to find out more about pain. Pain can be very complicated and even with all the advancements in medicine and human physiology there is so much we don’t know about pain. One we thing know for sure though is ALL PAIN IS REAL. However, sometimes even when there is no tissue damage our brain produces an output signal of pain. This can be due to a sensitized ne...rvous system and physiological changes in nerve signalling. Some people call this pain ‘PERSISTANT PAIN’. So, the Elf was right that pain is in your head because your brain is in your head and your brain is responsible for the output signal of pain. Julie Tschofen, Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist, has training in persistent pelvic pain. Conditions she treats include pain with sexual activity, pain with gynecological exams, post surgical pain, pregnancy pain and pain due to c-section or vaginal delivery. Our Elf booked in to see RENEE HILL, one of our fabulous musculoskeletal physiotherapists. After a thorough history taking and exam RENEE determined our Elf was suffering from scroll-liosis too much time spent reading Santa’s naughty-nice list. RENEE did some soft tissue release, dry needling and then showed our Elf this stretch. Did you know this stretch can help reduce pressure on sensitized structures in the back and pelvis? Masks. A bit of a contentious issue these days. I see a lot of worry about how masking up increases carbon dioxide and reduces oxygen. Well, if that were the... case, wed have seen surgeons and nurses dropping like flies in the OR! The truth is, masks DO feel different. They CAN increase the work of breathing a bit (especially for those with lung disease) and they can make you FEEL claustrophobic! But, in the absence of lung disease, having a problem with a mask speaks more about your breathing tolerance than anything. They take getting used to. If you have anxiety and breathing dysfunction, maybe we should work on that. Getting used to wearing a mask in places where we cant stay at a safe distance or where there are larger crowds/poor air circulation might be the new normal for awhile. Rather than bemoan in, work to getting used to it! Remember that most of us arent masking up for ourselves- we are doing it for those that cant and those with compromised immunity! In summary, cloth and surgical masks filter particles - not oxygen and carbon dioxide. There is NO evidence that wearing them increases carbon dioxide in the blood.
