Joy: In a state of delight. Joy not only for the sake of it, but for the stake it has in transformation. When we live with trauma stories, trauma is embedded in us on a cellular level. We have learned to survive life - to see life as something to survive from, not to thrive from. I believe that there are many reclamations one has to do when untangling their trauma story/stories, such as having choices, opportunities for empowerment, and safety. Occupying safe places with safe people. Joy is another component, I think. Doing something for the joy of it allows us to reclaim a state of bliss of our own choosing. It takes us to a place of innocence that is often taken from us in trauma. It takes us, if only for a moment, from surviving to thriving. Pure joy. What brings you pure joy?

My whiteness, or rather my acknowledgment of my white privilege has been a slow reveal over the past few years. That very fact is white privilege incarnate - the luxury of knowing only when I want to pay attention. The world is paying attention. We are posting, and making signs, and listening and talking. Let us not make this a trend, but rather a true visceral shift in the way we look at race. Let us put on the glasses that allow us to filter everything through the context of privilege, and remain radically empathic. Let’s change it all. Let’s be willing to be uncomfortable.
