Started as a journal of Mel Andres journey to hula and the foundation of his Halau Na Pohaku o Laka, reconnecting to his roots, contemplating the richness of Hu...la, its message of Aloha, sharing and teaching these values in his halau, a vow not to make it for profit and never depriving those who couldn't afford to pay...but a commitment for a renewal towards Huliamahi or social transformation which we call Aloha Aina (World filled with Love). If this resonates to you, like and join us. See more

For the year 2021, the vision remains the same, but the mission and objectives has changed as we geared up towards a more contemplative pastoral approach, a focus into the creation of a halau since the objective for 2019 has not materialized and instead witnessed to the creation of a halau in 2020. As we approach 2021, we have find a place we call it home and named it after the Lady of Love and Compassion, Poli'ahu, the home of Halau Na Pohaku o Laka.

Lady of Mauna Kea, Our Lady of Snow, born from God's Tears of Love, Patroness of the poor, farmers and fishermen, Lady of Compassion, Protector of the weak, Beacon of those lost in the seas, Patroness of the working class.... watch over us especially in this time of pandemic. Protect us from all evils. E OLA MAU KA WAHINE E MENEMENE AKU AI. May the Lady of Mauna Kea that gives compassion be remembered.

Remember that Ares started to promote salsa and rueda not just for fun but as a means for social transformation. When it fails to deliver, it has to fold up. Right now, this means is more feasible in a halau where the seed for redemption is achievable while mindful of the many obstacles and hindrances ingrained in this society. It is in this halau (group) that a counter-culture is nurtured and honed in the mentality and spirit of each individual, with clear vision and not just implied from its objectives. Through our dance, we show what we mean to say, and say what we mean. These are the things that cannot be done with simply-for-fun dancing like salsa or rueda. Only when the goal is clear that this transformation in self-society will be achieved.
