Well our concerns about lambing out wearing a prolapse harness were proven insignificant today. 2 lovely pure white ewe lambs arrived overnight completely unaided by us. 5.9 and 6.6lbs. Pics to be added later today of all this year's lambs so far.
We did our lamb weigh in. Ram 1 ... 10.3 lb Lost ram ... 10 lbs Ewe 1... 5.7 lbs... Ewe 2 ... 7.7 lbs Ram 3 ... 9.9 lbs Lost ram ... 10 lbs An average twin Katahdin lamb is 8lbs, we suspect the 2 large lost rams might have had a tough delivery and were not able to be cleaned up quickly enough by the mother, resulting in the sad loss. They were well formed, no obvious signs of trauma or ailments. Hoping the next arrivals have a safer delivery and happy start to life.
Another delivery overnight, twin rams, good size but we lost one again. Not sure what's going on when good size ram lambs pass and yet small ewe lambs survive it's both puzzling and upsetting.
Finally first lambs arrive. 2 ram lambs first, one found dead. Always hurts. You wait and watch then go out for an hour and return to find the ewe desperately licking her twin offspring. Its not the loss that really disturbs me, its the not knowing if you could have helped had you been there. 10lb lamb survives, the other also about the same size. This ewe successfully delivered 9lb twins last year, so we don't suspect a tough delivery this year, but ..... ? 5 hours later 2 small ewe lambs arrive to a first time mom. Their weights will be determined tomorrow, left them to settle overnight. Fingers crossed.
Lambs are late this year ...... waiting, waiting, waiting. Some ewes are absolutely huge. Wouldn't be surprised to see triplets or more from one of our girls.
Happy happy 1st birthday to our little Snickerz.
Love our little farm life. A flock of healthy sheep with lambs at foot, beautiful mini donkeys (love the yearling Jenny's feet, too cute) and her half brother is a gem, their mother a sweet little lady.
Enjoying time playing with my donkeys.
Love the Spring on our little farm.
Successful lambing done for another year. 13 live deliveries, 1 lost ram lamb. 9 ram lambs and 3 ewe lambs on the ground. So far no bottle feds. Last ewe delivered this morning 2 rams ... a solid black and a white and tan. Doing well. Life continues on the farm despite the craziness in the world we live in.
Lambs popping up all over the place this week. Since Saturday last weekend we have had twins, 1 of each. Sadly the ram didn't make it, Wednesday twin rams, last night 1 if each and this morning 1 ram so far. What a lovely Spring so far. Few more ladies to go.
Lambing has started for us. First Ewe, Megan, is in labour.
