As a mixed-race person of Asian-Canadian descent it’s been heartbreaking and alarming following the news over the past year. Although there is already a deeply embedded history of anti-Asian racism across North America, from the Chinese Exclusion Act, Head Tax, to Japanese Internment Camps, the recent hate crimes against our community have grown exponentially over the course of the pandemic. I worry for my Asian family and friends. I stand with my community and ask you to st...and with us too. It’s been a year today of dancing from home, of missing my weekly gigs, of not getting to see some of my favourite clients, communities, and friends on the regular. At the time of the shutdowns many of us performers hoped it would just be a few weeks, but here we are a year in. To say I miss it all would be a great understatement, I have thought of performing in person every single day since last March, and worried and strategized about how we as a society will be able to saf...ely support the performing arts again. I’ve thought of how we could be doing it better. Any outdoor, distanced gigs have been a breath of fresh air. I have gone deeper into my practice waiting for when I can share my art in person. With the light of the vaccines on the horizon, I am looking forward to the days when we can all see and dance together safely again. Friends if you have it in you, virtual hugs and support for your performers these days, it’s been a year for many of them too. Footage by @bonfire.counselling See more
