It was a pleasure to participate in celebrating this young man and his family this weekend. Beyond Sound DJ / Beyond Party Planning (BPP) created an amazing celebration, and kept the party going all night long! Mazel Tov, Ben!

I love these women and I love photography. (And I love Annie Leibovitz, too.)

We had super sunny weather for the wedding, but their engagement session was more "typically Vancouver".

Meet Dr. Rihab Elzein, today’s Human of Support. Dr. Elzein is both a family physician and an addiction medical doctor. Q: What do you do? How long have you ...done this? A: I have worked in many branches of medicine both here and in the UK for over twenty years. I was previously an orthopedic surgical registrar in the UK. I recently emigrated to Canada where I am currently a family physician and an addiction medicine doctor. I became a doctor following in my father’s footsteps and I have a sister, Abier who is a consultant hematologist in the UK. Two of my brothers are currently in medical school so you could say it’s the family business. Q: How has COVID-19 changed your job? A: During the pandemic, it was important to me to continue being physically available for in-person care for my patients who are journeying through their recovery. I found myself being inspired by my patients who are committed to their recovery, even in these challenging times. I think that there are significant obstacles that my patients have had to overcome. Social isolation and a lack of community engagement and support are challenging for all of us and especially so for those of us in vulnerable situations. My family practice has moved completely online for the last 2 or 3 months. It’s so much easier for my patients to see me online but at the same time, the nature of my vocation is that sometimes we need to see people face to face in certain situations. Telemedicine has added new elements to that engagement, it still allows a rapport with my patients in their own space, on the other hand, it cannot take the place of physical and practical interaction. Overall it has been a positive development in my practice as it widens the ability of those who have access difficulties to still get one on one time with a doctor. Q: How are you finding joy right now? A: I’ve spent so many years being a doctor and scientist that it's been a wonderful opportunity to explore my artistic side, which includes watercolour painting, writing, and gardening. My sister Tasneem introduced me to sourdough baking and it seems to have inspired a passion in me. The time not spent in commuting to work has given me a delightful opportunity to get stuck into ‘me time’ activities which were previously not possible given my crowded days. Q: What positive things are you seeing right now? A: It has been heartening to see that BC has managed to keep the pandemic at bay, keeping cases and deaths related to COVID-19 low. I have been especially pleased to see that my patients, some of whom are homeless, have been practicing appropriate social distancing measures and using personal protective equipment. Demonstrating the seriousness of the pandemic, but also showing their own commitment to keeping their communities safe, especially as protecting this sense of community is one of the first steps in beating addiction. Q: Describe a moment that has truly affected you? A: As a new Canadian it was touching to experience the connectivity, love, and support of the whole nation through the STRONGER TOGETHER, TOUS ENSEMBLE food bank benefit concert. I have never felt more proud of my new adopted country, it confirmed my feelings that Canadians are a family, kind, caring, inclusive, and committed to the well-being of all Canadians. Q: Do you have something you’d like to share? A: I love to share my newfound decompression outlet, my watercolours. I think it is important that everyone finds an outlet that allows them to find joy as we are navigating particularly challenging times, especially when it comes to our stress levels and mental well-being. Selfcare is so important and that could be as simple as a few extra minutes carved out of the morning routine for stretches, yoga, watercolours, coffee, and a conversation with your partner- Whatever gives you joy. Take time. It is a gift we should not squander. Taking care of our emotional well-being is so important. Q: Please tell us something Funny/lighthearted/quirky A: I have found myself spending a significantly increased amount of time with the two Scorpios, in my household. My partner is never still, and I often come home from work to find all of the furniture rearranged and rooms half painted. It is also quite possible that my dog thinks I’ve lost my job since I’ve been working from home more often. He keeps trying to comfort me during the day. #HumansOfSupport #StayHome #StayPut #StayBrave #FrontlineWorkers #SocialDistancing #ThankYou #BC #Physician #Doctor #Healthcare #Assessment #Addiction #FamilyDoctor #Telemedicine #FamilyPractice #StrongerTogether #NewCanadian #Clinic #Canada #Coronavirus #COVID19 Photo by: Josh Neufeld Photography Written by: Tracey Lynn Wade Do you know someone who is making a difference in your community?
