Active Release Technique (ART) The Active Release Techniques (ART) Soft-Tissue management system is a highly effective treatment for injuries to muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments and other soft tissue. The ART method is based on scientific evidence, that muscles, nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues develop adhesions within, around and between them after acute, repetitive injuries and chronic irritations. Adhesions cause the motion of muscles and joints to be altere...d and the compression of nerves, resulting in a wide variety of symptoms that characterize the cumulative injury circle and reduction in biomechanical performance. Example of these injuries collectively called cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) include: rotator cuff syndrome, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), carpal tunnel syndrome, runner’s knee (patellofemoral syndrome), chronic low back pain, and whiplash associated disorder. American Federal Statistics show CTDs to have increase 670 percent in the last five years. Call us today at 604-882-0911 to book your next appointment!

Great tips below! REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURIES As your workload at the office increases, so do repetitive actions, such as typing, using your computer mouse and talking on the phone. These routine tasks seem simple, but they can add a level of physical stress to the emotional and mental stress of getting the job done. In fact, repetitive strain injuries have skyrocketed in the last 20 years due to the increasing reliance on workplace technology.... Try these tips to reduce the strain: Computer Monitor Position your computer screen directly in front of you. Allow the muscles in your eyes to relax by following the 20/20/20 rule: Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and focus on an object that is at least 20 feet away from you. Telephone Use your hand to support the telephone against your ear and alternate sides regularly. Do not cradle the phone between your ear and your shoulder. Consider using a headset or speaker. Chair Sit upright and all the way to the back. Place a support cushion or roll against the arch of your low back for lumbar spine support. Here are some tips to help you adjust your chair: Stand in front of the chair and adjust the height so that the highest point of the seat is just below your knee. Sit on the chair and make sure that your knees are bent at approximately a 90-degree angle when your feet are flat on the floor. Adjust the backrest forwards and backwards as well as up and down until it fits the hollow in your lower back. Sit upright with your arms hanging by your sides. Bend your elbows at about a right angle and adjust the armrest height until they barely touch the undersides of the elbows. Remove the armrest from the chair if the right level cannot be achieved. Lastly, don’t forget to take a quick stretch break or change position every 30 to 45 minutes. Your back, neck and shoulders will thank you for it! https://www.chiropractic.on.ca//repetitive-strain-injuries/

When the face is needled, blood flow and Qi (energy) carries nutrients to the cells; the body interprets the insertion of the needle as a positive injury (microtruma), which, in turn, through stimulation of fibroblast, can increase collagen output.

The following disorders can be treated:... Sure Massage Therapy feels good and it can help you relax. But massage therapy can do much more than that. Here are six healthy reasons to book your next or your FIRST appointment with one of our RMT's. 1. It counteracts all the daily stress we put on our bodies, such as sitting, typing, using our Smart Phone's. "Most individuals are dealing with some kind of postural stress, says Dr Bob Hafizi of Complement Health Care", "more often than not [that stress] tends to manifest... in the shoulders and neck. Desk workers, beware. More advanced forms of postural stress show up as pain or weakness in the low back and gluteals caused by prolonged periods of sitting. Luckily, massage can counteract the imbalance caused from sitting, which means you can keep your desk jobas long as you schedule a regular massage. 2. It eases muscle pain. Massage increases and improves circulation in your muscles which allows the body to heal more effectively. 3. It soothes Anxiety and Depression. Human touch, in a context that is safe, friendly and professional, can be incredibly therapeutic and relaxing. And, a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, found that patients who were depressed and anxious were much more relaxed and happy, and had reduced stress levels after massage. 4. It improves our sleep patterns. Not only can massage encourage a restful sleepit also helps those who can’t otherwise comfortably rest. 5. It boosts our immune system. A 2010 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that massage boosts patients’ white blood cell count (which plays a large role in defending the body from disease). 6. It relieves headaches. Next time a headache hits, try booking a last-minute massage. Massage can decrease frequency and severity of tension headaches. Research from Granada University in Spain found that a single session of massage therapy has an immediate effect on perceived pain in patients with chronic issues. A lot of runners swear by this sometimes painful form of bodywork. What is it, and do you need it? Think of Active Release Techniques (ART) as massage’s crazy cousin that works harder, faster, and more efficiently. It helps athletes ranging from runners and triathletes to NFL players and Olympic weightlifters. ART began in the ’80s with Colorado’s Dr. Michael Leahy and is now a gold-standard treatment. In the beginning, the idea was to train 10,000 medical professionals and ...therapists at a skill level that had never been done before, said Leahy. We wanted to cut soft-tissue treatment costs in half. We’ve done that. The ART provider network now includes 14,000 certified providers, mostly based in North America, but it’s quickly growing on an international level. ART involves intense active movement-based massage treatments, which sets it apart from passive massage techniques. Injured or not, Leahy said that athletes in training are a candidate for ART. There’s ample evidence to show that ART promotes faster recovery, restoration of normal tissue function and prevents injury. We fix things before the athlete even knows there’s an issue. ART is how you keep yourself in the game, said Leahy. The most limiting factor to race-day performance is how well and consistently you train, but certain issues can hold you back. That’s where ART comes inyou can train better. There are more than 500 established treatment protocols for the entire body; however, ART is anything but standard. It’s an art. Instead of treating a general area, the provider uses his hands to feel for abnormal or damaged tissue in muscle, fascia, tendons, ligaments or nerves. Abnormalities include scar tissue, adhesions, and dense tissue. These aren’t always easy things to find. It takes time to get the feel of what different tissues feel like and knowing what’s healthy versus abnormal tissue, said Dr. Vince DiSaia, a certified ART provider and chiropractor located in Orange County, Calif. But knowing the feel of tissue and correct muscle-movement patterns is what allows us to be very specific with diagnosis and treatment. If this sounds like something you would benefit from, please contact the Team @ Langely Chiropractic and Wellness #604-882-0911.

Have you thought about a Sports Massage but you just weren't sure, have a read at this great article then book an appointment with one of our great Therapists, just call #604-882-0911. Sports massage is a type of massage that can alleviate pain occurring in certain parts of the body, which can be caused by too much physical activity. This type of massage was originally developed to serve athletes as a way to prevent and relieve injuries, but both athletes and non-athletes can... gain physiological and psychological benefits from receiving sports massage therapy. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness Prevention; Sports massage therapy can prevent or relieve delayed onset muscle soreness. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, delayed soreness typically begins to develop 12 to 24 hours after the exercise has been performed. DOMS may produce the greatest pain between 24 and 72 hours after the exercise has been performed. Sports massage therapy prevents delayed onset muscle soreness by encouraging blood and lymph flow throughout the body, preventing muscle fatigue. Stress and Pain Reduction; Sports massage therapy can help a person manage stress. When a person receives a sports massage, their body releases neurotransmitters called endorphins. According to American Spa, endorphins are released by two centers of the brain known as the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, and they act as the body's natural pain reliever. Endorphins that are released due to receiving a sports massage help to decrease anxiety, provide pain relief, improve mood and enhance a person's state of well-being. At Langley Chiropractic and Wellness we look at your "Wellness" from a variety of different approaches. One of the really fascinating options we have are "Myers Cocktails". Have a read below at what they are and book an appointment with us to start feeling better today! What is a Myers’ Cocktail, and what conditions does it address? A Myers’ Wellness Cocktail is a nutritional cocktail given intravenously (IV), or through a vein. It consists of magnesium, calcium, vario...us B vitamins, and vitamin C. The Myers’ Cocktail has been used to treat general fatigue, chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia, relieve acute asthma attacks, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinus infections, seasonal allergies, migraine headaches, muscle spasms, menstrual cramps, as well as to support recovery from endurance athletics. Many relatively healthy patients choose to receive periodic Myers’ Cocktail injections because it enhances their overall well-being for variable periods of time. This cocktail is named after John Myers, a physician from Baltimore, Maryland. He treated patients with IV nutrient therapy for over 25 years. Since then, thousands of patients nationwide have received this cocktail with great benefits. How does IV Nutrient Therapy Work? IV administration of nutrients can achieve blood concentrations not obtainable with oral (pills or liquid), or even intramuscular (IM) administration. For example, an IV of Vitamin C can raise the blood levels 50 100 times higher than what a person can do taking it orally. Because of this, a person doesn’t develop diarrhea, and at these higher blood levels, IV vitamin C can exert effects similar to pharmaceutical drugs such as antivirals (e.g. influenza drugs), antihistamines (e.g. Benadryl or Claritin), or smooth muscle relaxants (e.g. asthma and angina drugs). Plantar Fasciitis What is it? Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, which involves pain and inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes.... It is usually associated with stabbing pain that typically occurs with your very first steps in the morning. The pain may persist throughout the day or return after long periods of standing. Plantar Fasciitis is particularly common in runners as well as people who are overweight and those who wear shoes with inadequate support. Factors that increase the risk of Plantar Fasciitis include: -Being between the ages of 40-60 -Long-distance running -Ballet and dance aerobics -Being flat-footed -Obesity -Occupation that requires walking/standing for an extended period of time. Treatment options Stretching and specialized devices may provide symptom relief. These include: Exercises to help stretch the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon as well as to strengthen lower leg muscles, which stabilize your ankle and heel. Custom-Made orthotics: A doctor may suggest custom-fitted orthotics to help evenly-distribute pressure to your feet. Shock-Wave Therapy: In this procedure, non-invasive and painless sound waves are directed at the site of heel pain to stimulate healing. Our Chiropractor and Orthotic Specialist, Dr. Bob Hafizi, is available every Tuesday and Thursday at Langley Chiropractic and Wellness. For more information or to make an appointment, contact 604-882-0911.

What Is Hallux Rigidus? Hallux rigidus is a joint disorder at the base of the big toe. It causes pain and stiffness in the joint, and with time it gets increasingly harder to bend the toe. Hallux rigidus is actually a form of degenerative arthritis, affecting the big toe’s motion and limits its ability to bend. What are the causes?... Common causes of hallux rigidus results from wear and tear that often develops in people who have defects, such as those with fallen arches that alter the way their foot and big toe functions. In other cases, it is associated with overuse, especially among people who engage in intense activity, or jobs that increase the stress on the big toe (i.e. squatting). In addition, Hallux rigidus can also result from injuries or it may be caused by inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. What are the symptoms? The following are common symptoms associated with Hallux Rigidus: Pain and stiffness in the big toe during use. Pain and stiffness aggravated by cold, damp weather. Difficulty with certain activities (i.e. running and squatting). Swelling and inflammation around the joint. As the disorder worsens, additional symptoms may arise including: Pain without any trigger or movement. Difficulty wearing shoes due to bone spurs. Pain in the hip, knee, or lower back due to changes in the way you walk. In severe cases, limping may occur. What kind of treatments are available? Treatment for mild to moderate symptoms of hallux rigidus include: Orthotics: Custom orthotics to help improve foot function. Anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, may help to reduce pain and inflammation. Physical and injection therapy for temporary relief of pain. For more information on Hallux Rigidus or to consult with a doctor, contact 604-882-0911.
