On Remembrance Day, we must pause to honour, reflect on, and thank the men and women that sacrificed so much so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. We must also honour and thank those that continue to serve their country and defend those freedoms.

All aboard for tickets to #BrightNightsYVR 2020! You can now book your spot for one of Vancouver's favourite holiday traditions. With a modified, safety-focused... experience, your family outing can stay on track without worry. Things might look a little different this year, but donations to the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund will still be accepted at the front entrance by volunteers - so after all the ups and downs in 2020, it's an excellent way to get into the giving season. Please note that in order to adhere to social distancing measures, masks will be required, and the train plaza will not be open to explore as in past years. But that won't dampen our spirits! We appreciate everyone's understanding, and with everyone on board, we just know the train will be filled with joy, awe, and a whole lot of holiday fun! Book your spots now, and let's make Stanley Park bright this season! Tickets and more info at www.brightnights.ca. Presented by Vancouver Park Board.

This time the patient died, after waiting three hours for an ambulance. https://bc.ctvnews.ca/she-d-still-be-alive-b-c-family-wants Tragically, more than two... hours after this woman's family placed the call for an ambulance, with the family pleading with ambulance dispatchers, BCEHS finally notified Coquitlam Fire and Rescue, who arrived a few minutes later, assessed the woman's condition and called BCEHS to urge them to elevate the urgency. But by then it was too late. Initial 911 call: 5:01 pm Coq. Fire notified: 7:11 pm Ambulance arrives: 8:07 pm Two years ago, I raised concerns about a new ambulance dispatch protocol that no longer notified Fire and Rescue of medical calls in their community, other than calls of the highest acuity. https://www.facebook.com/notes/richard-stewart/bc-ambulance-shouldnt-keep-firerescue-in-the-dark/1922735904413174 In that case, an 80-year-old woman had been left lying on hot concrete in the sun in Coquitlam's Town Centre Park waiting more than an hour for an ambulance, an incident that took place ACROSS THE STREET from Coquitlam's Firehall No. 1. BCEHS (Emergency Health Services) dispatchers didn't notify Coquitlam Fire and Rescue; when I came upon the volunteers caring for the woman, I called CFR directly, and fire crews promptly arrived and were able to correct inaccurate information that BCEHS had (they had her age as in her 50s, for example, when she was 80), which raised the call priority significantly. At the time, I urged the parties to resolve the battle, as I predicted that one day someone would die because BCEHS won't tell local fire departments of various medical emergencies. This, in spite of the fact that Fire first-responders, with significant training in emergency first aid, can pretty much get to an emergency anywhere in Coquitlam in 4 minutes. I truly value and respect professional paramedics, who train tremendously long and achieve a high level of proficiency in a wide range of medical crises. We need more ambulances and more paramedics, to be sure, and paramedics need to be properly paid (they currently aren't) and supported. I fully support paramedics in these issues, as I don't think the Province treats them well or supports them adequately. But in the meantime this shouldn't be a turf war; it should support what's best for patients. :-( We need BCEHS to commit to working WITH communities to improve the situation. I offer condolences to the family and friends of Coquitlam resident Maureen Bower.
