We want to let readers and our visitors know that the recent headline about wedding fee increases in the local media failed to let the public know that the raise in wedding package pricing included significant increases in services in response to the needs of brides and grooms. County Council, Lang Advisory Committee and staff raised the wedding pricing fee of $3600 in order to include services that it became clear were needed for a spectacular and safe wedding experience at... the Village. We are proud to introduce Judi Clayton of Wheelhouse Event Co. (wheelhouseeventco.com) who is now providing wedding planner services for weddings held in the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building (PCAHB). Weddings now also include a security company to ensure the safety of all guests and the protection of the Village cultural heritage. In addition, the higher price quoted in the heading also includes professional photography by Heather Doughty Photography (heatherdoughtyphotography.com) (optional package). All of these services in the charmed setting of the Historic Village and the state-of-the-art McCloskey Great Hall and HTML Insurance Kitchen in the PCAHB make weddings at Lang Pioneer Village Museum a great place for a wedding at comparable market rates. Happy Tuesday! Acquired earlier this year, our treasure for this week is a Debenture Certificate issued by the Cobourg and Peterborough Railway Company on January 1st, 1854. A debenture certificate is a document which certifies that the holder is a creditor of the company who has issued it. These certificates show how much money an investor has given a company, the interest rate to be paid to the investor, and the schedule of repayment to the investor. The Cobourg and Peter...borough Railway was one of the first rail lines to be built in Central Ontario. Construction began in Cobourg in 1853 with completion in Peterborough late in 1854. The first passenger trip left Cobourg on Friday December 29th, 1854 at 10:30 am. It took the train less than two hours to reach Ashburnham. Over the next forty years the railway evolved, and changed hands and names several times. It was sold to the Grand Trunk Railway in 1893, and was officially closed in 1898.

Normally at this time of year, as we prepare to begin our Christmas event, we collect food donations in support of the Otonabee-South Monaghan Food Cupboard. This year as a result of COVID, the Food Cupboard is operating a little differently, but the need is still there! We would encourage everyone attending our Heritage Christmas in the Village tours (and all of our wonderful visitors!) to help us continue the tradition of supporting the Otonabee-South Monaghan Food Cupboard by making a donation. Details on how to make a donation are located in the poster below. Thank you for supporting the Food Cupboard with us this holiday season!

This week’s video is a recipe for Christmas Pudding sometimes called Plum Pudding. It is that traditional Victorian dessert, which is either loved or hated, served on Christmas day. It was popularized in Charles Dickens' book, A Christmas Carol. Pen Vogler is a food historian specializing in food in literature and has been a guest curator of the exhibition Food Glorious Food: Dinner with Dickens at the Charles Dickens Museum. Enjoy and if you try it out please send us ...your pictures! ____________________ What Museum Fans are Watching! This week’s What Museum Fans are Watching post is a short, restored, 1904 film of Edwardian era women punching time sheets at Westinghouse Works in in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It’s easy to forget that people in history were, in fact, real people. This video captures a moment which might seem mundane but brings so much humanity to the past. It is particularly touching to see the smiles, and laughter, of these women. ... This video feels like a meditation we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. ____________________ What Museum Fans are Watching! It's time for Tuesday's Treasure! Take a look at the image posted below. Did you think this was a print? You wouldn’t be the first. It’s actually a textile woven on a Jacquard Loom! The Jacquard Loom was invented in France in 1804 and made its way to Peterborough in the late 1800s. This particular Jacquard textile was fashioned after the painting entitled "The Storm". The Storm was painted in 1880 by Pierre Auguste Cot, a classically-trained French painter. The inspiration for this work is unknown. It may have been based on the French story of Paul and Virginie or the Greek tale of Daphnis and Chloe. Both are stories of childhood friends who later become lovers. The original piece is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Happy Treasure Tuesday! This week’s treasure is a copper bed warmer. Bed warmers were filled with hot coals and placed under sheets. The sheets could easily catch fire if they were dry, so the bed warmer needed to be shifted periodically. The pan of this bed warmer has a faint etching of the blue willow pattern. Blue willow was designed in the late 18th Century by Thomas Minton and various stories were created to help promote the design. The most popular story begins with t...wo lovers of different social standing. They elope together against the orders of the girl’s father. One night, the girl’s father sends his men to murder them. The pair are reincarnated as birds, united for eternity. The origins of the story depicted on the plate are unknown but the story is thought to possibly be linked to Chinese culture where true love should not upset the family hierarchy.

We invite you to call on your collective imaginations and creative sparks, and gather at a distance with us, as we exorcise our pandemic angst in a fun, active and safe way with our Pandemic Processional: A Participatory Art Happening on Saturday, October 31 at 12 noon. We will be leading a costumed march (or walk, or dance) through the spacious roadways of the Historic Village. We invite you to come dressed as a plague doctor or a witch and be a part of this unusual event... as we parade to the haunting backdrop of 200 year old buildings, and some eerie music. Bring your capes, masks, hats and broomsticks homemade or store bought. It’s about to get spooky! The cost for both spectators and participants is just $10 per person. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance. This Saturday’s post is from a series we’ve seen before. It also references another series we love, and showed in last week’s post! Join us for another visit with Mrs. Crocombe, from Audley End House and English Heritage one of our staff favourites. She receives a package from Mr. Townsend (from JAS Townsends in the US) with ingredients and a recipe to make an old-fashioned pudding. The autumn has always been a time when people start baking and making comfort food like th...is cornmeal, blueberry and maple dish. If you decide to make the recipe we’d love to see pictures! _______________________________________________ What Museum Fans are Watching! This week’s treasure is a wooden gingerbread clock. The clock’s maker’s mark indicates that it was made by the Ansonia Clock Company and that it won an award at the Paris Exposition in 1878. The Ansonia Clock Company was established in Connecticut in 1850 by Theodore Terry and Franklin C. Andrews. In 1854, a fire destroyed the factory. The company later opened a factory in Brooklyn, New York. This factory also caught fire, leaving the company with a quarter of a million dollars in losses. Despite these setbacks, the Ansonia Clock Company went on to prosper. Later in that decade, Ansonia was producing 10,000 clocks a day and had completely recovered from its debts. Check back next week to see what treasure we will showcase in our next Treasure Tuesday feature!
