Taking time to reflect on the realities of discrimination and the ugliness of politics. While I have always known that being a public person in political life ...requires a healthy dose of ego and a thick skin, the past day has highlighted the additional prejudices and barriers that IBPOC candidates are forced to confront. When I was elected to council, as the youngest, only person of colour, and only queer person on council, I did find that my experience differed significantly from the rest of my council colleagues. Even though I was one of three rookie councillors, there were times when advocating for progressive ideas that I was told ‘that’s not how we do things here’. This, despite the fact that I had been working in public government service for several years prior. The double-standard became evident as fellow (white) rookie councillors’ voices and ideas were often given more consideration. Tone-policing was often used to shut me down. I am eternally grateful to my fellow colleague Susan Chapelle, who was the only person who consistently encouraged and supported me through these challenges. In fact, she was the first person to suggest that I should run for city council! As I look back, I better understand that this was likely because she, as a Jewish-Canadian woman who had previously worked in a male-dominated industry had also felt this same double-standard. I am proud of my achievements of having successfully implemented Squamish’s first developer Community Amenity Charges to fund affordable housing and big improvements to our public spaces. I am also proud that I chaired the Housing Task Force, which convened all stakeholders in the community to build support for inclusionary zoning and a more active role for the District in the construction and provision of affordable housing. My heart was filled when I visited Squamish after my time there and saw the construction of these new affordable homes. I am left wondering what more I could have achieved had it not been for the intersectional barriers I faced as a queer person of colour.
