Can diet affect my teeth? Definitely! A diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, cheese, nuts, and minerals can help prevent gum disease and protect against mouth cancer.
Avoid using your teeth for anything other than chewing food. You risk chipping or even breaking your teeth if you use them to crack nuts, remove bottle tops or rip open packages.
Having a toothache or jaw pain? If you a toothache coming on or have jaw pain, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Your dentist will diagnose the underlying issue causing the pain and correct it before it turns into a bigger problem.
In addition to brushing and flossing everyday using a mouth rinse can increase the cleanliness of your mouth. Antimicrobial mouth rinses help reduce bacteria and plaque activity, which lead to gingivitis and gum disease.
Swollen Gums Inflammation of the gums caused by a bacterial infection is called Gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can become a more serious condition known as periodontitis, both of which are major causes of tooth loss in adults.
Tongue Cleaning In addition to brushing your teeth everyday, twice a day, you can improve your mouth's freshness by cleaning your tongue. Bacteria collect on your tongue, and simply brushing your teeth doesn't remove those bacteria. Tongue bacteria produce compounds that can cause bad breath and may also cause other health issues.
Tartar Tartar is a crusty deposit that can trap stains on the teeth and cause discolouration. Calcium and phosphate bind to form crystals on the teeth. These calcium phosphate crystals eventually harden within plaque, forming tartar. Tartar creates a strong bond that can only be removed by a dental professional.
Did you know?! Fluoride is needed by the body to strengthen or remineralize the enamel (outer layer of teeth), to prevent cavities from starting, to reduce the size and number of cavities, and to lessen tooth sensitivity. Fluoride can be found in toothpastes and mouth rinses. Make sure you use a fluorinated toothpaste and mouth wash to reduce the chance of wearing out your enamel.
Toothbrushes Change toothbrush at least every two to three months. Otherwise, you're just transferring bacteria to your mouth!
Sugar-free gum or mints with xylitol Xylitol has been shown to have decay-preventive qualities, using a xylitol product immediately after a meal can help reduce plaque, inhibit adhesion of bacteria to the teeth and reduce contact time of sugars on teeth.
Protecting your braces Avoid foods such as hard and sticky candy, gum, ice, pretzels, popcorn; pizza crusts and nuts which can not only cause cavities by sticking but also can break the orthodontic appliance resulting in a longer duration of treatment.
Is a little neglect in my tooth care really that bad? YES! Neglecting your teeth and not visiting your dentist regularly can cause the accumulation of plaque on your teeth. This plaque can further cause harm to your teeth by creating space around your teeth that can lead to bone destruction and tissue surrounding your teeth eventually causing tooth loss.
What Is The Best Time to FlossBefore or After Brushing? Some say before, some say after; but the most important thing to remember about flossing is to do it! If you don’t floss you miss cleaning approximately 30% of surface area. So whether you floss before you brush your teeth or after just remember to do it!
