-16 this morning so had to break out the Filson Packer! Love this coat! Seems Axle does too! #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
GRAPHIC WARNING! Nicole alerted me to Crows and Eagles landing near the frozen river on the Ranch this morning. Seems a still born foal was dropped by a wild Mare in the wee hours before sunrise. This foal was born way out of cycle in the dead middle of winter and months before normal foaling season. Now the hunt begins to find the distressed wild Mare that birthed it and see if she’s okay.... https://flyinglranch.ca/ #portaltothemagesticandwild #flying_l_ranch
Cabbi the little Dunn Filly is such a cutie! She’s soo gentle and curious and loves kisses, even from an ugly mug like me! She’s going to make an awesome companion! https://flyinglranch.ca/ #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
Pouring the feed to the ponies! Expecting past -30 tonight so gotta keep them in the green! . Challengers getting a bit snorty near the end of the clip. https://flyinglranch.ca/... #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
Being a kept horse at the Flying L this winter is a pretty good thing. We’ve had 5’ of snow this season and maybe getting another 2’ today. You can see a wild herd in the background foraging on one of our hay fields, while our saddle horses get the green squares. We’re at the point where we are letting the wildies (over 50 right now) get what they can, as this kind of winter has a high mortality rate in the wild. ... https://flyinglranch.ca/ #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
Laid back Friday... hope yours was too! https://flyinglranch.ca/ #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
Hard to believe this hungry small herd of wild horses is so trusting that they sit calmly when I get close. In actuality, the lead Mare was a rescue horse here for two years before we turned her back out, and she’s the one that lead them here. She knows it’s a safe space where they can get some good feed in the middle of a hard winter. It’s been almost two years since I’ve seen her. I’ve never observed wild horses do this so quickly but when the lead mare thinks it’s okay,... then they follow suit. She’s right! We will do a health check on them and let them hang for a while. The buckskin Stud isn’t interested in causing any trouble which is a first. Just look at that handsome fella and his adorable offspring! https://flyinglranch.ca/ #portaltothemagesticandwild #flying_l_ranch
Emery and I doing more ground work in the corrals on a couple of beautiful wildies @jacqueline.d.jennings horse Nemiah and the Flying L up and coming Captain. Calm and quiet is good. They are years apart but from the same wild bloodline. I must say they look great under saddle! https://flyinglranch.ca/... #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
Cowboy Emery Phillips taking a break from the corrals, tending fires and catching the sunset. Peaceful... https://flyinglranch.ca/... #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
Subzero temps is no problem for our trusted hardworking clearing crew! Native saw men such as Rocky and his sons are some of the most skilled bushmen on the planet! We’re over 1/2 way done on the boundary fence clearing work. So much work goes into having a successful and thriving ranch! https://flyinglranch.ca/... #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
Playing with the horses a bit before the nighttime feeding. They get pretty frisky when they see the hay coming! Sorry for the shaky camera work, but they are hard to keep up with! https://flyinglranch.ca/
Getting Captain in the corral and starting the process. His body language tells me he’s got that attitude and I’ve got lots of work to do!! He outweighs me by 6x’s... What a magnificent animal!! https://flyinglranch.ca/ #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
Captain a 1200 lb wild horse off the local mountains with a soft side for his human. Like, share and follow to stay tuned for much more on this handsome fella! He’s going to have a very exciting 2021! https://flyinglranch.ca/... #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild See more
Yep! It’s wintertime on the ranch and when the river and streams freeze over, it’s a wild horse free for all! Since they compete for forage with our rescue horses and working herds, I’ve got to gently show them back off the ranch... nice and slow. It’s important and a bit of a balancing act to not put too much pressure on them but to let them know they're not welcomed.... This particular wild bunch is a black mustang with a variety of mares and a few yearlings. I’m sure they will pay us another visit as the ranch is a bit of an oasis this time of year. Especially when there is a lot of snowfall. https://flyinglranch.ca/ #flying_l_ranch #portaltothemajesticandwild
Snow storm moving in so I figured I would treat the pasture horses to some green hay to keep them warm through the night. They had no problem with my offer! https://flyinglranch.ca/
